A Minute with Mary: Mothers Provide the Future
September 18, 2012

The saguaro’s you see are well over 100 years old, some may be close to 200 years old, and they are still standing tall. They are so strong and endure much, and still keep their good health. This photo shows them in full bloom with their beautiful white flowers, the birds love their fruit.
One such principle is to take care of yourself. Ironically, that is usually the first thing a mother sets aside. However, as women age, they discover that taking care of themselves is essential, not only for themselves, but also for the best health and care of their families. A mother needs to be strong and healthy to care of others.
Aging itself brings up its own unique issues. Like most women, I am always interested in the latest anti-aging discoveries. I was intrigued to hear what science tells us about our genes*. It may come as surprise, but the most current science shows that the primary purpose of our genes is not to make us live a long and healthy life. Most of our gene activity peaks during our reproductive years, and is intended for us to have reproductive vitality. The purpose is that the human race survives and continues; the human race as a whole is a priority over any one individual person’s longevity. It’s an established fact that gene activity becomes inefficient after reproductive years. To stay healthy, we need to do more, it does not just happen. I find this to be profoundly interesting.
Women in general, and mothers in particular, have always given of themselves to others. We are the ones who bear children. I think it is fascinating that the survival drive of our genes parallels what we naturally do. And quite frankly, the human race depends on us. These new findings reinforce the core value of having and raising our children. We should be quite proud of this, and fully understand and embrace our importance as mothers.
Take care of yourself, make it a priority. You are important not only to your family, but also to the human race. Without mothers there is no future – for anyone.
