A Minute with Mary: Breast Cancer Awareness, Women Beware
October 15, 2012
Mary Guignon Richards
Do you know the origin of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month? I have personally been turned off by the use of the word “Awareness” in this campaign. In its place, the word Prevention would be significantly more proactive, positive and hopeful. The state of being aware has nothing to do with prevention or cure.
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) was founded in 1985 as a partnership between the American Cancer Society and the pharmaceutical division of Imperial Chemical Industries (now part of AstraZeneca, maker of several anti-breast cancer drugs). The aim of the NBCAM from the start has been to promote mammography as the most effective weapon in the fight against breast cancer, according to wikipedia.com.
