MSG Can Make You Fat

The common flavoring salt known as MSG damages the appetite regulation center in the hypothalamus region of the brain, causing central leptin resistance and consequent obesity. When scientists need to study a fat rat that is not diabetic they feed it MSG until it becomes obese.

A new study involving Chinese citizens found that MSG intake of 330 mg a day doubled the risk for obesity1, independent of diet and exercise.

Because MSG directly damages the subconscious brain and thereafter alters the correct perception of a full signal, it is a culprit in the obesity epidemic. The use of MSG should be completely restricted in our society, since we are dealing with an obesity epidemic – the costs of which will affect everyone.

The problem is that MSG is the most widely used flavor enhancer in the world. It is common as part of the brand flavor in fast food, processed food, Chinese food, canned food, frozen food – it is virtually everywhere! It is seldom listed on the label and is hidden by various deceptive labeling strategies permitted by the FDA. Even “natural flavor” on a label often means MSG.

The corrupt food industry will defend the use of MSG because their highly addictive brand flavors rely on it as a vehicle to stimulate the brain and create an addictive response to a given taste.

Preparing food from scratch is not only very healthy for you, but clearly the best way to avoid MSG. Congress should investigate and require the clear labeling of MSG. Better yet, this brain-damaging chemical should be banned from the American food supply.
