September 8, 2010

Mothers who do not breastfeed their children for at least 1 month are twice as likely to develop type 2 diabetes1, compared to mothers who did and women who have not had children.
During pregnancy extra fat is stored so as to nourish the baby through breastfeeding. This is actually a form of metabolic stress wherein leptin, blood sugar, insulin function, and thyroid function get a real workout. It appears that part of the natural recovery of the metabolic strain of pregnancy is to get another calorie-burning workout called nursing. The failure to do so may leave metabolism handicapped and more at risk for later life blood sugar malfunction.
Nursing for at least the first few months of life is not only vital to helping your child get started on the right digestive and immunologic path – it is vital to keeping your metabolism in better working condition.
