Birth Control Pills Linked to Lupus
April 15, 2009

A new study evaluating data on over 1.7 million women has found a significant risk for developing lupus1 from the use of birth control pills. The risk is highest within the first few months of use and for women on higher doses. This is one more example of how dangerous just about any drugs are, even those in common use. .
I remember back 20 years ago when estrogen replacement therapy was also linked to increased lupus. It is well known that too much estrogen suppresses T suppressor cells of your immune system (which call your troops back in after they do routine chores). The result is that your immune cells stay out longer and have more potential to adversely interact with your own body tissues (especially if they are inflamed for some reason), which is why women suffer from autoimmune problems at a ten times higher rate than men.
Of course, many women run “high estrogen” menstrual cycles who are not on BC pills, it is just that BC pills can really make matters worse for those at risk. High estrogen cycles are accompanied by heavy blood flow/clotting, cramps, breast swelling, and tenderness.
Those who are at particular risk will also have a combination of excessive stress-related wear and tear and ongoing digestive problems. Stress lowers progesterone, in turn creating a relative estrogen excess by disturbing the natural balance between the two hormones. Digestive problems reflect an imbalanced digestive tract wherein hostile bacteria can “eat” the conjugation bond of estrogen that is being excreted, which can then re-enter your body and contribute to higher than normal estrogen levels.
The same issues, when they exist, also contribute to breast cancer risk, so this is not a trivial issue. If many women simply understood what the symptoms they are experiencing mean, then many lives could be saved by correcting digestive problems, boosting stress tolerance, and correcting issues of estrogen imbalance – all issues where appropriate nutritional support can make a world of difference.
It is a crime against the women in America that the FDA fails to warn of the risks, fails to demand that birth control pills be properly studied, and actively suppresses knowledge of natural means to address key issues that are at the root of life-threatening problems and diseases that needlessly affect so many women.
