Green Tea and Resveratrol Extracts Inhibit Prostate Cancer

Natural compounds within green tea1 (ECGC or polyphenols) and red wine (resveratrol or grape vine extract) have all been found to inhibit a powerful signaling pathway that is required for prostate cancer growth.

Through a variety of animal experiments the researchers showed that these potent nutrient extracts could kill prostate cancer cells as well as drastically inhibit the growth of implanted prostate cancer cells/tumors in animals.

The scientists proved the specific pathway involved (sphingosine kinase-1/sphingosine 1-phosphate or SphK1/S1P). They point out that this pathway also plays a role in colon cancer, breast cancer, and gastric cancer.

The researchers proclaimed that this could lead to a major advance in the treatment of prostate cancer. “The profound impact that the antioxidants in red wine and green tea have on our bodies is more than anyone would have dreamt just 25 years ago,” said Gerald Weissmann, MD, editor-in-chief of The FASEB Journal. “As long as they are taken in moderation, all signs show that red wine and green tea may be ranked among the most potent health foods we know.”
