Balance Blood Sugar and Beat Holiday Cravings
Holiday happy hours, parties, and Christmas cookies. Temptation is everywhere during the Holidays! It’s supposed to be the happiest season of all, but often the Holidays are found mingling with feelings of guilt. Instead of checking your will power at the door and vowing to join a gym on January first, stop cravings before they start and resist the temptation by keeping blood sugar balanced with these tips!

Cravings 101
We all know what we should and shouldn’t be eating, but then the temptations hit us. What happened?! Humans aren’t wired to resist food, as our biological programming drives us to seek food to survive. You can blame your blood sugar, in part, for that – and those bothersome cravings!

Your brain likes to use sugar for energy and for primary function. If your blood sugar levels drop too low, your brain will send out a red alert signal to get more sugar ASAP. This results in major cravings, often for sweet things or carbohydrates.

If you add holiday temptations to this challenge, it is no wonder your will power has run out! There are certain things that can cause cravings to be worse than they need to be. If you are experiencing cravings after dinner, poor will power for sweets, or need to have something to eat to get back to sleep in the middle of the night, you might be experiencing blood sugar irregularities. The good news is there are things you can do to keep blood sugar steady so that you don’t get cravings anymore.

When your blood sugar spikes quickly, it will crash down quickly too. When it crashes down, your brain starts looking for fuel and you get cravings. The trick to preventing cravings is to prevent those quick spikes and drops. Follow these easy tips to keep blood sugar balanced and stay in control of your appetite though the whole Holiday season!

1. Follow the Leptin Diet.
The Leptin Diet is important for balancing the hormone leptin and reversing Leptin resistance. Leptin is in charge of insulin, the hormone that manages blood sugar. In fact, leptin is the CEO of all hormones in your body. The science behind leptin is that it is just as important when you eat as what you eat. When you eat in harmony with leptin your cravings will go away and your health will improve. There is a lot of power in these five simple rules.

2. Fiber Up.
Fiber slows food movement out of the stomach and into the digestive tract. This results in a slower increase in blood sugar and a long lasting full feeling. All good things for your cravings and fitting into your New Year’s Eve party dress! Guar gum is an excellent fiber supplement choice. A study with obese individuals found that guar gum fiber reduced blood sugar levels by 10 percent. Participants also lost a significant amount of weight without changing other aspects of their diet.

3. Use Nutrition
. You can use nutrition to help balance your blood sugar and prevent cravings. This is particularly helpful if you are diabetic, overweight, or frequently fight cravings for sweets and/or carbohydrates. Bitter herbs, inula racemosa and gymnema sylvestre, are known as "sugar-busters" because they help reduce the desire for sweet tasting food by bringing the taste system back to natural balance. Cinnamon is another excellent blood sugar stabilizer. Human studies have shown promising evidence that supplemental cinnamon can reduce fasting blood glucose and A1c, a better indicator of how stable your blood sugar is long-term.

Often the Holiday season brings feelings of guilt and larger pants. It doesn’t have to be that way! By following the Five Rules of the Leptin Diet and using nutrition strategically, you can resist Holiday temptations without having to rely on only will power. So, go ahead and join the party. Happy Holidays!
