During a 12 month weight loss program individuals taking 3,320 IU of vitamin D per day (83 µg/d) significantly improved various parameters indicating better cardiovascular health.

The researchers were particularly interested in reducing elevations of parathyroid hormone, a newly identified cardiovascular risk factor.  Vitamin D was quite effective at lowering the elevated parathyroid.

Additionally, those taking vitamin D had lower triglycerides and less of the inflammatory marker that comes from fat known as TNFa.  These findings are also cardiovascular friendly, as well as indicating a favorable change in leptin status as a result of taking the vitamin D.
