Thyroid Hormone, Leptin, and Coordination

Thursday, May 01, 2008 - Byron J. Richards, CCN

Impaired coordination may be a first sign of sluggish thyroid function.  Are you bumping into things too often?  If so, you may have sluggish thyroid due to faulty leptin function.

Based on signals coming into your subconscious brain from around your body your hypothalamus gland decides how much thyroid hormone should be made.  It then makes thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH), which is sent over to your pituitary to make some thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), in turn telling your thyroid to get in gear and make some thyroid hormone.  I also just explained how important this system is to the prevention of heart disease in women.

The new gene science is showing that your brain’s decision to make TRH in the first place is controlled entirely by leptin.  Leptin is not working right if you are gaining too much weight or stuck at a weight that is too high.  You can get leptin working properly by being in a proper weight loss trend or by maintaining a healthy body weight – which in turn will promote normal and healthy thyroid function.

The good news is that you don’t have to be a perfect body weight before leptin starts working properly; you just have to be moving consistently in the right direction.

The researchers also found that TRH not only signaled the production of TSH and consequently thyroid hormone – but that it also goes over to your cerebellum (the physical motion control center in your brain) and activates normal function.  Thus, if you are low on TRH is will show up as being clumsy.  A lack of coordination can now be added to the list of sluggish thyroid symptoms that are very important to nip in the bud to maintain optimal health.
