Weight Loss News From Byron J. Richards
The Pleasure of Food and ObesityMonday, October 15, 2007 - Byron J. Richards, CCNThe acquisition of food is vital for survival. Due to this important fact the pleasure-related reward circuitry in the brain is designed to make eating and pleasure go hand in hand. Indeed, when mice have this pleasure circuitry knocked out then they won’t even bother to acquire food in easy reach and starve. While this principle is vital for survival, it is also fundamental to overeating and almost all other addictive tendencies are founded on food acquisition brain circuitry. New research has identified variance in genes that relates to the amount of stimulus (or food consumption) required to satisfy this pleasure center. The important brain neurotransmitter is called dopamine, which operates in synergistic harmony with leptin when a person is healthy and of proper body weight. Low dopamine causes a person to eat more food than is needed in order to get enough pleasure from the food to feel satisfied. Individuals with stronger dopamine status feel “pleasure satisfied” eating less food, and thus find it much easier to maintain normal weight. Gene weaknesses can be offset by nutrition to some degree. This means that nutrients that help form dopamine (such as tyrosine and B-Vitamins) and nutrients that protect dopamine function (such as antioxidants) can help a person to feel satisfied eating more normal amounts of food. Conversely, factors such as stress, violating the five rules of the Leptin Diet, or not getting enough sleep will work to needlessly deplete dopamine and induce a person to “stress eat” in order to feel better, especially if a person has the genetic weakness to do so.
