Sleep Problems and Obesity in Children

Monday, February 11, 2008  -  Byron Richards, CCN

A February 2008 meta analysis1 regarding children their lack of sleep is driving home an important point:  children who do not get enough sleep are much more likely to gain excess weight.  Children with the least amount of sleep had a 92% higher rate of being overweight compared to the best sleepers.  Sleep is prime fat-burning time.  Not getting enough is a major stress for metabolism.
In general, for each hour of sleep that is lacking, the likelihood of obesity increases by 9%.  The optimal sleep duration guidelines are as follows:
A)  children under age 5: 11 hours or more per day,
B)  children age 5 to10: 10 hours or more per day, and
C)  children over age 10: at least 9 hours per day.
In children who are not yet old enough to swallow vitamins the best sleep helper is Coral Calcium powder.  In children old enough to swallow the top choice is RelaxaMag.  Many children as well as adults use both Coral Calcium powder and RelaxaMag to help ensure a good night’s sleep.
