Sleep Problems and Obesity in Children

A February 2008 meta analysis1 regarding children their lack of sleep is driving home an important point:  children who do not get enough sleep are much more likely to gain excess weight.  Children with the least amount of sleep had a 92% higher rate of being overweight compared to the best sleepers.  Sleep is prime fat-burning time.  Not getting enough is a major stress for metabolism.

In general, for each hour of sleep that is lacking, the likelihood of obesity increases by 9%.  The optimal sleep duration guidelines are as follows:
A)  children under age 5: 11 hours or more per day,
B)  children age 5 to10: 10 hours or more per day, and
C)  children over age 10: at least 9 hours per day.
