Obesity Drugs are Problematic

Tuesday, November 20, 2007  -  Byron Richards, CCN

Obesity drugs are big business, pulling in 1.2 billion in sales last year.  The British Medical Journal just published a review of the three main weight loss drugs and found that Orlistat increased rates of gastrointestinal side effects and slightly lowered concentrations of HDL Cholesterol High-density lipoprotein that is one of five lipoproteins that enable cholesterol and triglycerides to be transported within the bloodstream to the liver and to the adrenals, ovaries, or testes for the production of steroid hormones. (good cholesterol), Sibutramine lowered concentrations of HDL, raised blood pressure, and increased pulse rate, and Rimonabant increased the risk of depression, anxiety, and mood disorders.

There is no quick-fix drug for obesity.  Mastering Leptin is the key, which requires consistency over a period of time.  Weight loss drugs are not worth the risk
