Is Obesity a Social Disease?Thursday, July 26, 2007 - Byron J. Richards, CCNA new study published in the New England Journal of Medicine indicates that if a friend is overweight your chance of gaining weight goes up 57%, if it’s a sibling your chance goes up 40%, if it’s a spouse your chance goes up 37%. The researchers concluded that obesity appears to spread through social ties. What now? Never hang out with someone who is overweight? The study was immediately hailed as a public health breakthrough by those who have been completely inept at handling the public health relating to obesity in America. Watch out – if you think fluoride in the drinking water is bad just wait until the government gets done mucking with your friends. Our government is so inept at basic health advice regarding body weight that individuals have no credible help once cutting back on calories and exercising more does not produce enough of a result. The government fails to understand that snacking is killing America. The government does nothing to correct or regulate the horrendous quality of our food supply that is a major cause of obesity. Instead the government condones stimulants in food that create “brand addiction” to junk and fast food, perchlorate in produce and dairy products that undermines thyroid function, estrogen-like chemicals used as pesticides that absorb into fat and damage normal function, a variety of fat-soluble toxic pollutants like PBCs that absorb into fat and damage normal function, and now genetically modified foods that contain toxins in every cell. Cleaning up our food supply and environment are the only societal solutions to obesity. Our government doesn’t have the balls to make any changes as the industries that are making Americans fat have plenty of money to hire phoney scientists to deny any of the real problems are problems, or if the government acts these industries simply file law suits that take years and end up inconclusive. The social aspect of obesity is rooted in profits at the expense of human heath – not in your friends. The disease is to be found in various board rooms across the world.
