
Down Syndrome Linked to Leptin Resistance

Researchers have uncovered a clear correlation between Down Syndrome and leptin resistance. Earlier research has linked Autism and its spectrum of disorders with leptin resistance. While leptin problems are typically considered for their role in obesity, it is important to remember that leptin in the brain is a primary antioxidant that prevents excitotoxic nerve damage. I explain this in my book, Mastering Leptin. Leptin resistance means leptin levels are high in the blood, but low in the brain. Leptin levels rise during pregnancy to facilitate the growth of the placenta and store extra fat for nursing. Entering pregnancy overweight, gestational diabetes, toxemia, malnutrition during pregnancy, and premature delivery all have the adverse effect of the fetal programming of leptin resistance into the nervous system of the unborn child. Our society needs to focus on the health of mothers prior to and during pregnancy. The future health and intelligence of our citizens depends on it. Share:
