The New Frontier of Immunology

Few topics raise more fear or public concern than that of a killer germ.  The threat of a pandemic flu is real enough, and scientists warn it is just a matter of time.  Superstrains of bacterial infections are moving out of their hospital breeding grounds and into the general public.  The possibility of a terrorist attack using some kind of infectious agent, like anthrax, adds another twist to the issue.  The next generation of actually workable solutions will target the communication systems of germs that are their lifeline for infectious potential.

The reality is that we are running out of options in the current model of Western medicine thinking.  The antibiotic solution, which works by poisoning a germ to death, is mainly responsible for breeding the current superstrains of bacteria.  A “stronger” antibiotic essentially means more toxic, and we are already past the limit of safety for humans. The immunization paradigm is crumbling, as its many shortcomings and side effects relegate it to Stone Age technology.  Good hygiene is common sense, yet there are germs everywhere – exposure is your only option.

Breakthroughs are coming because we mapped the human genome and are now mapping the genomes of many foreign cells.  This has provided a goldmine of new information.  It is plain to see that infections generate signals that communicate to the human immune system and human metabolism, leading to direct inefficiency so germs can survive.  At the same time, germs communicate to each other, literally going into a hostile gang mode wherein there is strength in numbers.

Furthermore, this battle has been going on throughout evolution.  Plants, animals, and humans would not have survived without superior defense systems.  Any great advances in science in this century will involve learning how to deactivate the communication systems of germs gangs – thus neutralizing their infectious potential.

There are already many lessons from this body of emerging science that can help you stay well and have a higher-powered immune response.

1) Work on natural balance and harmony at your sites of interaction with foreigners.  This means be symptom free in your digestive tract, sinuses, lungs, and skin.  Nagging or chronic symptoms in these areas indicate immune system inefficiency that will contribute to a poor immune response if you are challenged.
2) Build more muscle.  Building more muscle actually requires that you have better connective tissue integrity everywhere in your body which in turn makes you much more resistant to a gang of germs setting up shop.  Muscles are actually part of your immune system, a savings account of proteins that can be used to make antibodies if you are challenged with a nasty bug.
3) Stay energized.  Get adequate sleep.  Use nutrients to help maintain a consistent energy level.  Your immune system needs energy, especially when you are under attack.  If you don’t have adequate energy there is no possible way you can mount an optimal immune defense.
4) Manage inflammation.  Wear and tear must be stopped or your immune system will limp through life in an inefficiently aroused way that handicaps your health.  This not only sets the stage for the early onset of age-related problems, it makes you a friendly place for germ gangs to live.
5) Fight smarter.  Trying to club a germ gang to death with a toxic concoction (antibiotics or the like) should only be a last ditch effort.  We now know our immune systems prefer strategies of negotiation (turning gangs back into farmers), sly deception (decoying gangs), and Trojan horse approaches (entering the germ as a friend and then using the germ’s machinery to set off a deadly chain reaction.)

There is a treasure trove of natural immune support strategies already available.  Learn how to use them as part of a healthy lifestyle.
