A
new study confirms a growing body of information that the health of the mother during pregnancy has a profound affect on the potential for future obesity. In the new study it was shown that high blood sugar during pregnancy doubles the risk for obesity between ages 5-7. Women entering pregnancy in an overweight condition and/or who eat poorly during pregnancy are at risk for this problem as well as multiple other pregnancy issues....

The Senate is about to approve legislation (Mothers Act - S.1375) which mandates the indoctrination of pregnant and nursing mothers into the use of extremely dangerous psychiatric medication. We already know this class of medication poses serious health risks to both mother and baby. Consequences to the baby are now proven to cause nerve-related changes that can adversely affect health for a lifetime.

Friendly flora (also known as probiotics or acidophilus) has been found to drastically reduce the rate of gestational diabetes during pregnancy, benefiting both mother and child. This is another study is a rapidly growing body of science showing that your digestive balance of flora has a tremendous impact on obesity, blood pressure, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, colon cancer risk, inflammatory bowel disease, and type 1 diabetes risk. This information applies to everyone and is especially important for pregnant and nursing mothers.

The impact of social connectedness on health is becoming an intriguing area of research far more important than previously thought. I recently reported the astounding 50% risk reduction in mortality when individuals are socially connected. Two new studies lend even more insight into the importance of this issue.

Several recent gene studies are demonstrating the life-long impact that early life stress has while in the womb and early childhood. The studies are showing that the influence of stress on the developing baby can turn on inappropriate gene settings that can lead to poor health, even poor mental health.

Dietary intake of DHA is vital for proper neurodevelopment, visual function, and the future health of every child. During pregnancy and lactation a mother’s DHA is preferentially transferred to the baby, potentially depleting a mother’s DHA which sets the stage for postpartum depression. A new human study with mothers and their infants has determined that 8% of fat calories as DHA is the optimal pregnancy and lactation dose for DHA that ensures both baby and mother have enough.

Understanding adverse gene programming in the womb (epigenetic changes) is a key part of the new frontier of science. Researchers have now proven that a low protein diet during pregnancy (malnutrition) induces a malfunction setting in a key gene known as Hnf4a, in turn leading to significantly increased risk for type 2 diabetes later in life.

Two new animal studies are food for thought for women of childbearing age. One study shows how easy it is to make an addictive food impression on the developing fetus. The other study shows that adequate antioxidants can prevent the problem.
