Men Who Are Fit Live Longer

A study released today in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association tested 15,660 African-American and Caucasian men over a 7.5 year period to determine if exercise capacity is a specific predictor of mortality. The study found that very fit individuals had a 70% reduced death rate and highly fit individuals had a 50% reduced death rate.

Low LDL Cholesterol Increases Depression Risk in Elderly Men

A French study of 1040 women and 752 men, age 65 and older, evaluated their cholesterol levels in the context of who developed clinical depression over a 7-year period. Men with the lower levels of LDL had double the risk of developing clinical depression. Women with lower levels of HDL cholesterol had a 50% increased risk of developing depression.

Alarming Rate of Death Linked to Short Sleep

A group of 741 men, average age 50, were followed for 14 years. Those with less than 6 hours per night of sleep had a 433% increased risk of death from any cause during the study period. This is an astounding number and places a new emphasis on the importance of quality sleep as one grows older.
