Vytorin Cancer Link Opens Can of Worms

In an unprecedented change of posture the New England Journal of Medicine has reversed itself on the issue of whether Vytorin causes cancer. In the initial release of data back in July NEJM stood by Merck and Schering-Plough, who hired an Oxford consultant to rule that a 50% statistically significant increased risk of cancer was by chance. I pointed out in an earlier posting that such statistical manipulation, based primarily on the opinion of the Oxford reviewer, was ridiculous. NEJM has had a sudden change of heart and now agrees with me.

The Excuse to Regulate – Control vs. Freedom

Americans are a freedom-loving people. Every July 4th we celebrate this fact. It is interesting that our government has a history of offering protection in exchange for a loss of freedom. On the surface this appears workable to many, mainly due to the unscrupulous individuals who harm others under the protection of everyone’s freedoms. Unfortunately for those of us who value freedom, hard work, act responsibly towards our fellow Americans, and genuinely try to be of help to others, there are plenty of slime bags figuring out new ways to con or injure people while they make money – not to mention our actual enemies. This leads to a never-ending drum beat for more regulation and consequent loss of freedom for all.

Gamma Tocotrienol Offsets High Levels of Radiation Exposure

A new animal study shows that gamma tocotrienol can powerfully offset the adverse effects of radiation exposure, including the reduction of peroxynitrite, the most damaging free radical.

Bromelain Has Potent Anti-Cancer Properties

Nutrients such as bromelain and papain contain protease enzymes that have long been used for their anti-inflammatory properties, enhancement of tissue healing, and as part of anti-cancer nutrient support. The research supporting the use of bromelain as a tool in the war on cancer has been building over the past several years. Researchers have now identified several cancer-killing mechanisms of bromelain, including deactivation of the key gene signal NF-kappaB and induction of the autophagy process that causes the cancer cell to self destruct.

Curcumin Helps Change Gene Function to Combat Cancer

Somewhat quietly, in state-of-the-art molecular facilities at the world-renowned University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, is almost secret research on the power of nutrition to kill cancer and help traditional cancer therapies work better. After all, the MD Anderson Cancer Center is at the forefront of new-fangled biological cancer medicines and has been a bastion of support for the rather toxic cancer treatments that have dominated Western medicine for decades. On April 21, 2011 they published a groundbreaking scientific review of their research on their favorite anti-cancer nutrient – curcumin. Times are a changing.

Cell Phone Frenzy:  Cancer Risk and Wimpy Semen

The World Health Organization set off a new cell phone alarm button around the world by concluding after a gathering of scientists that cell phones are possible carcinogens. A few weeks earlier Austrian and Canadian researchers linked cell phone use to poor sperm quality and risk for infertility – a study that hasn’t received the WHO-generated cancer buzz, but is potentially far more important.

Increasing Vitamin D Levels Will Likely Extend Lifespan

Current blood tests for vitamin D put the bottom of the normal range at 30 ng/mL (75 nmol/L). A new epidemiological study predicts that raising this bottom-of-normal score to 44 ng/mL (110 nmol/L) would reduce all-cause mortality around the world by 7.6 percent for African females, 17.3 percent for European females, and respectively, almost as much for men. And most notably, specific vitamin D-sensitive, disease-related mortality would drop by 20 percent.

Curcumin Now Touted as a Significant Weight Loss & Disease Prevention Nutrient

Korean researchers reviewed the last ten years of curcumin science as it applies to supporting weight loss and preventing obesity-related disease. Their conclusion is, “The modulation of several cellular transduction pathways by curcumin has recently been extended to elucidate the molecular basis for obesity and obesity-related metabolic diseases. These findings might enable novel phytochemical treatment strategies as well as curcumin translation to the clinical practice for the treatment and prevention of obesity-related chronic diseases. Furthermore, the relatively low cost, safety and proven efficacy of curcumin make it advisable to include curcumin as part of healthy diet.”

DHA Boosts Effectiveness of Cancer Treatments

It is in the best interests of any person going through cancer treatment to utilize various nutrients that can help the cancer treatment work better. Researchers at the Indiana University School of Medicine reviewed the science on DHA and cancer and came to the following conclusion, “Use of DHA with anticancer treatments provides an avenue to therapeutic improvement that involves less risk or side effects for patients and reduced regulatory burden for implementation.”
