A new study confirms that men who are overweight or obese are twice as likely to die from prostate cancer. I reported back in 2002 in my book,
Mastering Leptin, that leptin problems (overweight issues) are a main risk for developing prostate or breast cancer. The science was known back then. Obesity generates highly inflammatory signals that directly induce the cancer risk problem.

In the January 25, 2008 issue of the
Lancet an article appears, which if followed up on, would positively change the health of all Americans for generations to come. The article is titled

A wake up call has been issued to women. If you are overweight and you get breast cancer it is more likely to be life threatening, and you have significantly poorer odds of being alive 5 or 10 years following treatment if weight issues are not corrected.

Researchers just demonstrated that low melatonin levels are a new risk factor for invasive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. They had already demonstrated the same finding in premenopausal women.

New research is proposing overactive thyroid is protective against breast cancer because of the extra free radicals the condition generates that induce cell death in breast cancer cells. Conversely, a sluggish thyroid would have less ability to exert such influence on cancer cells, thus the higher rate of breast cancer.

In women ages 25 – 45 a clear link has been established between stress and breast cancer risk. Women with two or more traumatic events had a 62% greater risk, whereas women who were able to maintain a positive and optimistic outlook had 25% less risk.

Indole-3-carbinol, a compound found in cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, collard greens, brussels sprouts, and cabbage) and dietary supplements, has been found to modify a key enzyme involved with the spreading of cancer, especially breast cancer.
