The
Journal of Nutrition has published a study of Dutch elderly men that shows alpha carotene and beta carotene intake reduces cardiovascular deaths by 20%. Study participants were 72 years old on average at the start of the study. They were followed for 15 years to determine these results.

Researchers at the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention followed 15,318 adults over a 14-year period and discovered that as the blood levels of alpha-carotene went up the risk of dying from any cause, including cardiovascular disease and cancer, decreased by up to 39%.
