Antidepressants Linked to a 67% Increased Risk of Death

Researchers followed 136,000 postmenopausal women taking part in the Women’s Health Initiative and found that those who started taking antidepressants during the study had a 67% increased risk of death from any cause during the 6 year follow-up period of the study. They also had double the risk for a hemorrhagic stroke or a fatal stroke.

Zinc Reduces Rates of Pneumonia and All-Cause Mortality

Boston-area public health researchers present evidence that low zinc is present in 29% of their study population (adults over age 65). They found that low zinc doubled the risk for developing pneumonia as well as doubling the length of time the illness lasted. Even more importantly, independent of infections, low zinc was associated with a 39% increase in all-cause mortality.

The Vital Importance of Adequate Sleep

Two new sleep studies highlight health problems that can result when you do not get enough sleep. The first study showed that in healthy adults, one night of short sleep (4 hours) is enough to cause insulin resistance. The second study showed that getting less than six hours of sleep on a regular basis increased the risk of early death from any cause by 12%.

Alpha Carotene Reduces Mortality Risk

Researchers at the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention followed 15,318 adults over a 14-year period and discovered that as the blood levels of alpha-carotene went up the risk of dying from any cause, including cardiovascular disease and cancer, decreased by up to 39%.
