Temperature Drop Shocks the Thyroid

Northern areas of the United States are experiencing significantly swinging temperatures, a form of stress that sends the thyroid for a loop. Thyroid hormone adjusts itself once every seven days (the half life of the hormone). When daytime high temperatures vary 25 – 40 degrees over a period of a few days, the thyroid system really struggles to keep up.

Users of Many Dietary Supplements Found Far Healthier than General Population

Researchers at the University of California found that individuals who consume 17 or more different dietary supplements per day were found to be far more healthy than those who take no supplements or those who only take a multiple vitamin. The vitamin-taking group had much better nutrient concentrations in their blood and far lower amounts of disease-related biomarkers...

Zinc, Alcohol Damage, and Thyroid Function

Several new studies on zinc show an amazing ability to protect against alcohol damage. The data raises several interesting points – one of which is protecting yourself from alcohol intake and another is on general zinc deficiency, including alcohol induced, and its affect on thyroid function.

Zinc Deficiency Sets the Stage for Toxic Shock and Organ Damage

Zinc is required for healthy immune function. A new study shows that a small lack of zinc handicaps the ability to respond to a septic infection, resulting in significant inflammation, organ damage, and increased mortality. Over 750,000 Americans suffer serious and often fatal sepsis-related problems every year that could drastically be reduced by taking zinc.

Ensure Adequate Zinc for Flu-Fighting Immunity

Scientists at the University of Florida have shown that zinc not only supports healthy immune function, but increases activation of the T cells responsible for destroying viruses and bacteria. Healthy humans taking 15 mg of zinc per day had significantly improved T cell function, meaning they had a higher ability to ward off infections they could have been exposed to. This is an important point to keep in mind, especially with an unpredictable flu season ahead.

Zinc Reduces Rates of Pneumonia and All-Cause Mortality

Boston-area public health researchers present evidence that low zinc is present in 29% of their study population (adults over age 65). They found that low zinc doubled the risk for developing pneumonia as well as doubling the length of time the illness lasted. Even more importantly, independent of infections, low zinc was associated with a 39% increase in all-cause mortality.
