Today researchers from the University of British Columbia and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute released a study showing that popular bone drugs triple the risk for the death of bone tissue, resulting in pain and disfigurement. This new information helps to explain the recent FDA warning on debilitating pain from these drugs.

A recent study published in the British Medical Journal has insinuated that calcium intake in elderly women may increase the risk for a heart attack. The study involved 1471 postmenopausal women (mean age 74). The story has been spread by major news media and has confused and needlessly worried many women who are taking calcium for their bone health. The study contains numerous flaws and therefore its conclusion is not reliable.

A new study highlights the significant gains to be made by consistent calcium supplementation, gains that are lost when calcium supplementation is stopped. Maximizing bone development during teenage years is vital for a woman’s later-life risk for osteoporosis. Indeed, the failure to maximize optimal bone formation during teenage years is lost ground that is difficult to make up.

A variety of reports in the past decade have indicated that calcium may be a helpful weight loss nutrient. This prompted the dairy industry to widely promote milk as a weight loss food. On May 5, 2008 a press release reports on an article that will soon appear in the Nutritional Reviews journal that states “neither dairy nor calcium intake promotes weight loss.” For consumers this simply becomes another “butter vs. margarine” or “are eggs good or bad” dilemma. Extra calcium is one tool that can actually help many people to lose weight in a healthy way.

Calcium is the primary mineral in your bones. Calcium is also needed for muscle function, blood pressure regulation, nerve function, and cellular health. The way in which calcium ends up forming bone is of vital concern to your health – and not just for bone density. Bones are a vital power plant for the formation of red and white blood cells and even act as a regulator of metabolism. Indeed, bone health is a key sign of overall health associated with longevity.

A fundamental health principle is having a reserve of minerals that are involved in millions of daily chemistry reactions that sustain health. A new study of 64,000 women shows that higher intakes of both calcium and magnesium reduce the risk for developing type II diabetes by 21% - 33%. Even milk intake was found to be protective.

A meta-analysis of individuals with depression shows that the greater the depression the more at risk the individual is for bone loss, especially in premenopausal women. Ironically, another study shows that taking SSRI antidepressants makes bone loss even worse. Furthermore, doctors have reported nervous system toxicity from the common bisphosphonate bone drugs, including hallucinations. This is an example of common health problems faced by many women wherein the medical approach to help them actually makes their health worse over time.

A new Canadian study analyzes the sleep habits from children age 1.5 to 5 years looking for an association between sleep problems and the development of ADHD. The study confirms something I have been pointing out for a number of years – that an unstable family sets the “stress thermostat” into a hyper-vigilant mode resulting in a lack of sleep, wired nerves, and future ADHD. Boys with early sleep problems were more likely to be ADHD by age 5.
