Flawed SELECT Study Attacks Vitamin E

The National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) SELECT study (Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial) for prostate cancer in men was halted this week after initial data analysis showed that selenium and vitamin E, taken alone or together for an average of five years, did not prevent prostate cancer...Well I have a question for the nutritionally-challenged people at NCI; why did you design a study that couldn’t possibly succeed and then waste taxpayer money on it?

Sluggish Thyroid, Triglycerides, CRP, & Blood Pressure

A number of new studies have been making it clear that elevated triglycerides (excess fat blobs in your circulation) and elevated CRP (an inflammatory compound made by your liver) are key indicators of eventual heart disease. I would also like to point out that these markers are clearly linked to sluggish thyroid as well...

The Vital Role of Selenium in Thyroid Function and Health

Scientists are now reporting than many people are likely to benefit from selenium supplementation. Selenium is the key mineral that enables the conversion of thyroid hormone from T4 to T3 (biologically active form). Selenium is also required to make the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which protects the thyroid gland – including protecting it from thyroid autoimmune problems.

Poor Response to Exercise in Young Type 2 Diabetics

Type 2 diabetes is a difficult health problem because multiple aspects of calorie utilization simply don’t work properly. A study with young adults (ages 18 - 25) shows the cellular problem is worse than thought. Normally exercise conditions cells to make more energy by facilitating the development of additional mitochondria (cellular engines). This study showed that young Type 2 diabetic adults failed to activate the gene signals required for this exercise benefit, in turn making their metabolic problem more difficult to resolve

Low Selenium Predicts Damaged Red Blood Cells and Mortality Risk

A lab test result on the common complete blood count (CBC) is listed as RDW (red cell distribution width). As the score elevates the risk for mortality rises. Researchers have now shown that in women over the age of 65 elevated RDW is most associated with a deficiency of selenium, a key mineral for anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory defenses as well as thyroid function.

Modest Selenium Deficiency Increases Risk for Diseases of Aging & Thyroid Problems

A recent article evaluating modest deficiencies in selenium led to this rather stunning statement by the journal editor, “This paper should settle any debate about the importance of taking a good, complete, multivitamin every day," said Gerald Weissmann, M.D., Editor-in-Chief of the FASEB Journal. "As this report shows, taking a multivitamin that contains selenium is a good way to prevent deficiencies that, over time, can cause harm in ways that we are just beginning to understand."
