Insulin Therapy in Type II Diabetics Increases Cancer Risk

First the researchers prove that insulin drugs used by type II diabetic patients increase the risk for cancer. Then the researchers try to explain why what they proved is no big deal – an apparent effort to escape the wrath of the insulin-prescribing medical profession.

Is Your Job Making You Fat?

A new study paints a rather grim picture of the American workplace in the 21st century. It is full of stressed out people sitting in front of computers getting very little activity. As pink slips are handed out fat-laden junk food is rapidly consumed, even more than the typically stressful day. Once the workers get home they can’t wait to crash in front of the TV, too tired to exercise. It is a recipe for weight gain and poor health.

Will Gaining Weight Make You Dumb?

New research has linked the inflammatory compound C-reactive protein (CRP) to a decline in decision-making and cognitive function. Those with the highest levels of CRP had a full decade of extra brain aging. One way to have higher levels of CRP is to be overweight. White adipose tissue generates an inflammatory messenger known as IL-6 which travels from your fat to your liver and directly raises your liver’s production of CRP.

The Addictive Nature of Compulsive Eating

Is there any difference between obsessive eating and drug addiction? The answer, as far as brain circuitry is concerned, is no. Both problems are about reward circuitry in the brain gone awry. How can such individuals care so little about others and have no fear or remorse related to their actions? A rather surprising answer comes from research done at Vanderbilt University.

Poor Response to Exercise in Young Type 2 Diabetics

Type 2 diabetes is a difficult health problem because multiple aspects of calorie utilization simply don’t work properly. A study with young adults (ages 18 - 25) shows the cellular problem is worse than thought. Normally exercise conditions cells to make more energy by facilitating the development of additional mitochondria (cellular engines). This study showed that young Type 2 diabetic adults failed to activate the gene signals required for this exercise benefit, in turn making their metabolic problem more difficult to resolve

Death by Junk Food

A new study with mice shows that exposing them to a high phosphate junk food diet causes them to die sooner. High phosphate promotes calcification of all the wrongs things, especially kidneys and arteries. Extra phosphate exposure comes from soda and many food additives used in processed foods. The prematurely aging mice had hypogonadism, infertility, uncoordinated movement, severe skeletal muscle wasting, emphysema, bone loss, skin atrophy, and intestinal atrophy.
