Obesity drugs are big business, pulling in 1.2 billion in sales last year. The British Medical Journal just published a review of the three main weight loss drugs and found that Orlistat increased rates of gastrointestinal side effects and slightly lowered concentrations of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol), Sibutramine lowered concentrations of HDL, raised blood pressure, and increased pulse rate, and Rimonabant increased the risk of depression, anxiety, and mood disorders.

University of Kentucky researchers have reviewed the oatmeal science over the past 10 years and found the evidence of benefits to be stronger than when the FDA first approved claims for this food a decade ago. The research clearly shows that total “cholesterol levels are lowered through oat consumption...

One year ago JAMA published a major breakthrough article explaining that nonfasting levels of triglycerides (fat blobs) was an independent and highly predictive indicator of true cardiovascular disease risk. In the past year these finding have been widely agreed upon...

The new scientific toolbox is being used to poke around in HDL’s house, only to find good news and bad news. HDL has been labeled “good” cholesterol because it helps remove damaged LDL cholesterol from your arteries and has generally been associated with having less cardiovascular disease. It is now coming to light that the quality of the HDL you have is as important, if not more important, than the amount of HDL you have.

By now just about everyone is aware that consuming essential fatty acids like DHA is vital to your cardiovascular health, weight management, and general inflammation reduction. In general, the more health problems you have relating to cardiovascular health, blood sugar, weight, and inflammation, the higher the level of intake should be. A new study with Eskimos suggests that more is better as the study authors concluded, "Increasing EPA and DHA intakes to amounts well above those consumed by the general US population may have strong beneficial effects on chronic disease risk."

The simplistic notion that LDL cholesterol is “bad” and HDL cholesterol is “good” has only one purpose in public health dogma: scaring people into taking toxic statin drugs to lower their LDL cholesterol. A new study shows that some people with high HDL cholesterol have increased rates of chest pain, heart attack, and death – but who?

A new study shows that pomegranate can protect your HDL cholesterol. This is very important as those undergoing metabolic stress from being overweight, developing diabetes, or the metabolic syndrome often have lower levels of HDL cholesterol.

The thiazolidinedione diabetes drugs Avandia and Actos will break your bones and cause heart failure. DHA will help preserve your bones and rejuvenate your heart’s function. They all activate PPAR gamma. Understanding why the drugs are so dangerous and why the nutrient is so helpful is a prime example of why nutrition excels at restoring damaged metabolism and drugs are a fast track to a number-manipulating nowhere.

Thousands of studies have shown the critical function of fish oil--in particular it’s most important essential fatty acid DHA--to overall cardiovascular well-being at any age. DHA is the most deficient nutrient in the 21st Century diet, and good food sources of it like fatty fish, are often contaminated with mercury or other toxins. Therefore, a dietary supplement containing a toxin-free molecularly distilled DHA is invaluable for getting safe amounts of this vital heart-friendly nutrient. February is American Heart Month so it is worth summarizing some of the key DHA findings of the past year as they relate to cardiovascular health.

Pantethine can dramatically change your health and improve your metabolism. Pantethine, like no other nutrient, directly fuels the production Co-Enzyme A (CoA). CoA is a pivotal energy broker molecule in your metabolism, used in at least 70 metabolic pathways involved in the metabolism of fat, cholesterol, carbohydrates, and amino acids. Pantethine helps you clear toxins, boost your adrenal gland function, elevate your mood, clear your head, and is a vital nutrient for the health and well-being of your brain and cardiovascular system.
