In the January 25, 2008 issue of the
Lancet an article appears, which if followed up on, would positively change the health of all Americans for generations to come. The article is titled
Environmental pollution and diabetes: a neglected association. It is based on a solid scientific link between insulin resistance and pollution, especially compounds like PCBs and many pesticides used on food.

By now just about everyone is aware that consuming essential fatty acids like DHA is vital to your cardiovascular health, weight management, and general inflammation reduction. In general, the more health problems you have relating to cardiovascular health, blood sugar, weight, and inflammation, the higher the level of intake should be. A new study with Eskimos suggests that more is better as the study authors concluded, "Increasing EPA and DHA intakes to amounts well above those consumed by the general US population may have strong beneficial effects on chronic disease risk."

Dietary supplementation of 2000 mg EPA/DHA per day significantly improved the circulatory function of type II diabetic patients following a meal containing high fat. This is very important as elevated blood sugar tends, over time, to have a "cementing" effect on flexible structures like the circulatory system in turn leading to difficult health problems.

A new independent report, F as in Fat: How Obesity Threatens America’s Future 2010, makes it plain that America is in the midst of a rapidly expanding obesity epidemic. Obesity rates rose in 28 states in the past year. 38 states now have obesity rates above 25% and 8 states have rates above 30%. If health care costs are to be spread amongst all Americans then this is everyone’s problem.

The pain response involves interplay between immune cells and nerve cells. Many individuals experience exaggerated pain following an injury, surgery, or from other inflammatory causes. Pain signaling can overload nerve and immune function, tending to lock itself into place or prolong itself unnecessarily. New research shows that essential fatty acids DHA and EPA promote a class of compounds called resolvins which restore nerve and immune cell function to normal in a more timely manner, thus getting rid of excess pain. The researchers concluded, “Resolvins may offer novel therapeutic approaches for preventing and treating pain conditions associated with inflammation.”

The long chain omega-3 essential fatty acids of DHA and EPA are the most lacking nutrients in the American diet, compared to what humans have traditionally been eating over the past thousands of years. Two new studies add to the overwhelming evidence that these fatty acids, especially DHA, are incredibly beneficial to cardiovascular health.
