Calcium is the primary mineral in your bones. Calcium is also needed for muscle function, blood pressure regulation, nerve function, and cellular health. The way in which calcium ends up forming bone is of vital concern to your health – and not just for bone density. Bones are a vital power plant for the formation of red and white blood cells and even act as a regulator of metabolism. Indeed, bone health is a key sign of overall health associated with longevity.

Researchers at the United States Department of Agriculture are proving that the trace mineral boron contributes significantly to bone strength. Evidence has been building for a number of years that boron is needed for bone health, brain function, and immunity. In the latest study it was shown that deprivation of boron in mice resulted in weaker bones that broke easier than bones that were boron adequate.

During the heart health month of February it is vital not to forget your vitamin D. A new study reviews the importance of vitamin D to cardiovascular health, reminding us that lacking vitamin D sets the stage for more than double the risk of a life-ending cardiovascular event.

Actos and Avandia shouldn’t even be on the market as they have already been proven to cause heart failure. Now it is clear they also cause abnormal bone fractures. People who are type II diabetic are already at increased risk for both of these problems anyway. Why on earth would they want to take a medication that increases the risk for both problems even further.

Another drug debacle is blowing up in the corrupt face of the FDA. I have reported for years that Fosamax and similar drugs are one of the greatest con jobs ever perpetrated on women (statins and mental health drugs hold the top spots). Now ABC news is highlighting the fact that women who have faithfully taken their Fosamax, which is known to create highly disorganized and chaotic bone structure, are experiencing spontaneously breaking femur bones from doing virtually nothing.

Two studies from the Special Surgery (HHS) and Columbia University Medical Center have confirmed the recent media attention on the extreme dangers to bone from the long-term use of bone drugs (bisphosphonates). The researchers found that after four years of use bisphosphonates had a negative effect on bones causing declining structural integrity of bone. This finding is very important because doctors expect patients to take these drugs for life. ABC news recently highlighted a number of faithful Fosamax users who experienced abnormal fractures in their large femur bone from doing very little.

Researchers at Minnesota’s Mayo Clinic have found that people who have higher intakes of vitamin K have a lower risk of developing Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Those in the top quarter of vitamin K-1, from diet and dietary supplements, had a 45% less risk for developing this cancer of immune cells. This is the first time such a clear link between vitamin K and cancer has been established. Not surprisingly, the researchers didn’t bother pointing out the obvious implications of their research in terms of the negative effects of the commonly used vitamin K-blocking Coumadin – will it increase the risk for cancer?

In 1982, 2.5 million children had asthma. This number has skyrocketed to 7 million children in 2009 (9.4% of children). This is a national disgrace. It is no doubt a combination of pollution exposure, a lack of sun, family stress, gaining weight, and too much high-sugar junk food. A new study shows that a lack of vitamin D is common in children and the degree of the lack of vitamin D is associated with a higher need for drugs.

It is typical following traumatic brain injury that chronic fatigue sets in and last for years. A new study shows that this fatigue and its severity are predicted by the extent of vitamin D deficiency in these patients. I believe that this finding can be generalized to most situations of chronic fatigue, regardless of their cause.
