Anxiety is a Problem of Missing Brakes

A new study shows that individuals with anxiety have a disconnect of regulation between the frontal lobes of the conscious brain and a core regulating center in the subconscious brain (amygdala). In normal situations your frontal lobe thought process dampens and regulates the alarm coming from the amygdale, helping to keep negative emotions in check and under control. The new study shows for the first time that this method of self-regulation is lacking in people who have too much anxiety as a baseline of function. In essence, they are lacking anxiety brakes.

Poor Response to Exercise in Young Type 2 Diabetics

Type 2 diabetes is a difficult health problem because multiple aspects of calorie utilization simply don’t work properly. A study with young adults (ages 18 - 25) shows the cellular problem is worse than thought. Normally exercise conditions cells to make more energy by facilitating the development of additional mitochondria (cellular engines). This study showed that young Type 2 diabetic adults failed to activate the gene signals required for this exercise benefit, in turn making their metabolic problem more difficult to resolve

Overweight Children Now Developing Hardened Arteries

The amount of weight gain combined with a lack of activity is a direct predictor of the presence of hardening arteries in children 8 – 11 years old. This is a shocking report, indicating serious heart disease setting in at an incredibly early age.

Resveratrol Protects Brain from Stroke Damage

The anti-aging resveratrol has yet another newly demonstrated method of protecting the brain. A variety of new cell and animal studies show that is activates an enzyme within the brain called heme oxygenase 1 that boosts up the brain’s defense system. When researchers gave relatively small amounts of resveratrol as a protective nutrient and then induced experimental stroke, reseveratrol drastically minimized the damage compared to animals not given resveratrol.

Dark Chocolate Protects Against Stroke-Induced Brain Injury

Dark chocolate contains protective antioxidant properties. However, these features are lost in the refining process. A recent study of mice pretreated with dark chocolate prior to experimentally-induced stroke showed that they suffered less brain damage. Even mice given chocolate only after the stroke had far less damage.
