Ask Byron Health Q & A

with Byron J Richards, Board-Certified Clinical Nutritionist
Q:

What are the best sources of calcium?

Byron: Diets rich in dark green vegetables, dairy and some fish are a source of calcium in the diet. However, the best sources of calcium for absorption and usage by the body are found in coral calcium, MCHC, or calcium coupled with amino acids for transport. Avoid inorganic calcium carbonate, calcium gluconate, bone meal, oyster shell, or dolomite. These forms of calcium require large amounts of hydrochloric acid to make bioavailable, thus they have poor absorption. Calcium citrate can many times contribute to headaches, fatigue, digestive problems, skin problems, and other concerns. Wellness Resources avoids these types of ingredients. High quality products to consider are Daily Bone Xcel, Daily Builder, Coral Calcium, and Cal Active. Each of these Wellness Resources products has very high absorption rates without the concerns of any heavy metals, fillers, or binders, and are in capsule form.*
