Quercetin Calms Down Eye Problems Associated with Hyperthyroid

Wednesday, November 16, 2011

Byron Richards, CCN

During hyperthyroid problems, tissues are excessively stimulated by excess thyroid hormone. One sensitive area is the eyes, wherein fibroblasts stimulate abnormal tissue formation resulting in bulging eyes. A new study shows that quercetin can settle down the fibroblasts, which will help offset the metabolic stress of this problem.

Quercetin was shown to inhibit gene signals associated with the hyperthyroid-driven inflammation as well as prevent the abnormal synthesis of hyaluronic acid, two key problems that enable abnormal structure to form. It also inhibited abnormal fat cell formation within the eye, yet another aspect of this problem.

Earlier this year I reported that quercetin can help inhibit thyroid cancer, a form of cancer on the rise in the U.S. As a matter of clinical experience, I have used quercetin to help calm down the auto-antibody response to either hyperthyroid or hypothyroid problems for several decades. It isn’t a cure, but it certainly can assist by helping to stabilize the excessive immune response.
