Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia essentially means that your muscles hurt too much, you have too much fatigue, you dont sleep well, you run out of gas and start hurting doing what many others consider normal activity, you have very poor stress tolerance, and your nerves feel wound up like a cat on a hot tin roof. Your ability to exercise and get a good response to exercise is typically impaired and the less exercise you do the worse you tend to feel (a nasty catch 22).

Fibromyalgia is usually triggered by some form of overload. This could be an accident, injury (especially whiplash car injury), illness, acute trauma, prolonged ongoing stress, pregnancy, etc. Previous earlier life traumas of one type or another increase the risk that a current stressor could set off the collection of issues referred to as fibromyalgia. Regardless of what triggered fibromyalgia in the first place it becomes its own set of self perpetuating circumstances that have the common theme that systems in your body that generally bounce back to normal function with a good nights sleep (called homeostasis) dont bounce back so well any more and stay stuck in a rut of poor function.

Bad fibromyalgia feels much like your body has been run over by a Mack truck after four or five days of fighting the flu except you have these feelings even though you arent sick with the flu. It feels like you ran a marathon, except you didnt. Some people have very mild fibro symptoms and others have significant difficulty making it through the day. Symptoms ebb and flow on various days; but the person with fibro knows that a major power outage with accompanying muscle pain can set in at almost any time from even doing just too much normal activity.

I remember back in 1990 when the American College of Rheumatology first defined fibromyalgia as widespread body pain lasting at least 3 months with 11 of 18 tender points sore. Prior to this time the very same patients were told that their problems were all mental and to take antidepressants. Such callous disregard for what patients were telling their doctors became politically incorrect and so a label of fibromyalgia became the new wastebasket diagnosis for just about anyone when no true disease that could be treated was found. This convenient description of symptoms continues to this day, and doctors still prescribe antidepressants, antianxiety medications, sleeping pills, and pain pills in an effort to assist those in need.

Back before 1990 those of us in the natural health field called the very same people the walking wounded. Ive spent years helping thousands of such people improve the structure and function of their muscles, nerves, and natural detoxification systems. The use of nutrition in this context is not the treatment of a disease or even a prevention of a disease. It does not replace medical care. It does not replace physical therapy, exercise, massage, counseling, body work, or any other therapy or assistance that a person may employ to help them improve their situation. Rather, nutrition is a tool that can be used to nourish important systems in your body to help them work as best they can nothing more nothing less.*

I view health as a continuum from perfectly healthy down various shades of grey to lessened fitness in structure or function. My goal for anyone is to help them maintain and improve the structure and function of their body. Individuals in the walking wounded category often need to improve their diets, their lifestyles, their stress management skills, various medical problems, etc. For any person trying to make improvements their overall approach is to have a team in place that helps them improve and nutrition is simply one helpful tool in the overall toolbox.*

We all take many things about how our bodies work for granted until they start not working so well. Individuals with fibromyalgia need to learn a great deal about nutrition and body function yet they often dont have enough energy to study for very long. Dont be discouraged just get started. Learn more as you have the energy to do so. My website has extensive information that can help you understand your body much better and practical steps you can take to help it work as it should.*

Next I will discuss the most common grouping of products most often used. Rate of Improvement

Multiple systems must gradually start to work better at more or less the same time which translates to more hours in the day when energy is available. Do not try to do too much too fast. As you begin to feel better gradually do more exercise from which you can easily recover. Nutritional strategies can significantly help you improve your response to exercise. As exercise begins working in your favor, gene signals are turned on by the use of your muscles that actually facilitate repair and improvement of many things in your body.

Stretching, flexing, and walking (progressively longer times) are the best basic exercises. Light weights or more strenuous activities can be added as you get better. Because muscle proteins can break down for 48-72 hours after exercise it is important that you dont push it too hard during the exercise (or doing your backlogged to-do list) only to find out two days later you made a big mistake. This problem can be avoided by gradually doing more as you can, and as your fitness improves you will eventually get to a point when you dont have to worry about this issue so much anymore (usually at least 3 months of steady improvement).

When you use various nutrient products start out gradually, increase doses slowly, and pay attention. You want to feel better. Just like you can do too much exercise too fast, you can take too many supplements too fast (even if they are what you need). You are simply trying to get your foot in the door and start feeling better, so you can exercise more, at which point more nutrients will work even better, and you will have more nutritional options at your disposal that you can count on to help you through your day.*

Most people feel better within a few days of starting their supplements and continue to make improvement as time goes along. The mark of truly stable improvement is better overall muscle fitness, able to maintain a normal or much improved work and activity schedule, and having few if any fibro flare ups.*

Detoxification

The removal of waste products is of paramount importance for any person with fibromyalgia. Too much trash is like throwing sand into the gas tank of a car it doesnt matter if the car is new or old it simply wont run with sand in the way. Most people do not understand the major pathways of trash elimination in their bodies, thus I have explained them in great detail on my Detoxification health page. It is very important that you become an expert in this subject and learn what your bodys specific symptoms are telling you. There are many different nutritional options, based on different needs, given on the Detoxification page.

Energy and Metabolism

In normal energy production for every calorie you burn you make 33 molecules of ATP (cellular energy). In fibromyalgia you are often making 3 ATP instead of 33 (1/10th the energy) and a pile of lactic acid. You need to employ strategies so that you are making 33 ATP per calorie more hours in the day at which point your energy will feel better and your head will feel like it is working. The more you learn about this subject the better, as it also involves how you eat and how your thyroid is functioning. The following links help provide you the additional information you need to know. It is a good idea to read my book, the Leptin Diet, which is like having an owners manual on how hormones work in your body and how to eat so that you actually get more energy from the food you are consuming.*

Stress and Adrenals

Stress-related systems in your body enable you to adapt to demands, cope with them, and then bounce back to a baseline of more relaxed function. These systems are strained in any person with fibromyalgia. This means stress responses may not happen at all, they may not happen at the right time, they may be exaggerated, and commonly it feels like something somewhere inside you is constantly dialing 911 but not quite sure what the emergency is. This leaves you feeling too wound up and anxious, like a cat on a hot tin roof. You need to learn about how your adrenals process stress, about how your brain processes stress, and the nature of Substance P. Much of this information will be new to you and mastering it will help put you back in control of your life.*

Restful Sleep

Many people with fibro are physically exhausted yet go to bed and stare at the ceiling.

In general, the more hours in the day your energy runs better the easier it will be for you to go to sleep. Your nerves will not go to sleep easily when there is too much trash in your body and you have built up too much Substance P in your nerves as the day has gone along. Of course, when you dont sleep well then it is a lot harder to have energy the next day (a vicious circle). The natural approach is to get energy production, stress processing, and detoxification systems all working better at which point your body can more easily go to sleep. There are a variety of sleep support nutrients that can also help you out.*

Body Repair

In some ways having to deal with fibromyalgia on a day in and day out basis is like having your body subjected to battle the battlefield being the inside of your body. Part of getting on track is naturally rejuvenating your bodys tissues, joints, and muscles. Best results occur as you use such nutrition in combination with a moderate and consistent exercise program. Nutrition excels at helping to improve the structure of your body. You have many options.*
