Quercetin Reduces the Risk of Pancreatic Cancer

Tuesday, October 16, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Research published in the American Journal of Epidemiology shows that quercetin intake directly lowers the risk of pancreatic cancer. Quercetin is a unique bioflavanoid that is available as a dietary supplement and is high in onions and apples.

Washington Post Calls the FDA’s New Reagan-Udall Center Rife With Risks

Monday, October 15, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Since mid summer I was the primary drum beat warning of the grave consequences to health freedom and health in general about turning the FDA into a pseudo drug company by giving it control over the licensing, patenting, and profits of the very drugs it is supposed to be regulating.  Congressional birdbrains failed to even debate the most sweeping change of the FDA in a hundred years!

The Pleasure of Food and Obesity

Monday, October 15, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

The acquisition of food is vital for survival. Due to this important fact the pleasure-related reward circuitry in the brain is designed to make eating and pleasure go hand in hand.  Indeed, when mice have this pleasure circuitry knocked out then they won’t even bother to acquire food in easy reach and starve.  While this principle is vital for survival, it is also fundamental to overeating and almost all other addictive tendencies are founded on food acquisition brain circuitry.

China – Soon to Be the Drug Kingpin

Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

The Wall Street Journal has outlined for the world the rapidly expanding Chinese drug market.  Many of the ingredients in brand-name drugs people already take come from China.  China is already the largest producer of chemicals for drugs.  For example, AstaZeneca’s Seroquel, a powerful anti-psychotic medication that is routinely (and inappropriately) prescribed in an off-label manner to children for mild behavior issues is produced with chemicals that come from China.

Dietary Supplements Improve Cognitive Development in Children

Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

European researchers have demonstrated that a multiple vitamin and DHA (fish oil) given regularly to children significantly boosts their learning power and cognitive performance.

Men Lose More Weight Taking Fish Oil

Wednesday, October 10, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

A study published in the International Journal of Obesity found that men taking fish oil lost the most weight while on a diet, an additional 3 pounds over 8 weeks (for a total of 10 pounds).  Eating salmon was also helpful.

Who is Preparing Your Food?

Sunday, October 07, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

A new animal study poses a whole new set of health questions.  Mice lacking immune competence in their digestive tract rapidly breed hostile bacteria that cause ulcerative colitis.  Once developed, the hostile bacteria are readily passed on to other mice.

Leptin Problems Cause Disease

Thursday, October 04, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

A new study echoes numerous earlier studies and explains that signals coming from fat cells, especially extra leptin due to obesity, is intimately involved with diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, hardening of the arteries, and heart failure.  Indeed, fat itself is an active metabolic organ and until individuals learn how to regulate leptin as a life skill they are simply asking for trouble.

Resveratrol Improves Insulin Function and Longevity

Thursday, October 04, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Resveratrol is a natural antiseptic compound produced in plants when they are under attack, especially by mold.  It is highly concentrated in red grapes that grow in damp or moldy areas.  It is also contained in roots of plants used in traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine, such as Polygonum cuspidatum.

Corn is No Longer Safe to Eat

Thursday, October 04, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

The FDA is near completely inept at doing its job of protecting consumers – and China is not the main problem – its United States companies who are forever altering the nature of the food supply by inserting toxic genes into every cell of food.  Their game if profit.  Human health is of little concern.

FDA Condones Unsafe Human Experiments

Wednesday, October 03, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

The New York Times reports that the FDA fails to ensure the safety of millions of people who participate in experimental clinical trials.  In fact, the government doesn’t even have any idea how many of these experiments are taking place.  The FDA haphazardly follows up on less than 1%, and when problems are found little or nothing is done.

Get Health Tips from the Expert

Monday, October 01, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Byron J. Richards, Founder/Director of Wellness Resources, Inc., is a Board-Certified Clinical Nutritionist and has been a charter professional member of the International and American Associations of Clinical Nutritionists (IAACN) since 1991. His professional experience with nutrition, thyroid, and weight issues dates back to 1985 when he began working as the nutritionist for one of our nation’s leading thyroid doctors, Keith W. Sehnert, MD. Time Magazine considered Dr. Sehnert the “George Washington of medical self-care.” He was one of the founding fathers of alternative health and sadly passed away in 1999. Together they were true pioneers in the area of thyroid health, hypothyroidism, and Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis…

FDA, Bush, and Republicans Attack Citizen’s Health Rights

Wednesday, September 26, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

The FDA reform legislation passed by the House and Senate shows just how corrupt the politics for profit system in America has become.  The idea that citizens would have no right to sue a drug company when they are injured or killed by a medication is a difficult pill to swallow.  Especially in light of multiple scandals, many ongoing, wherein the FDA and drug companies selectively hide important risks from the public in an effort to protect the profits of Big Pharma at the expense of human health.

Temperature Drop Shocks the Thyroid

Wednesday, September 26, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Northern areas of the United States are experiencing significantly swinging temperatures, a form of stress that sends the thyroid for a loop.  Thyroid hormone adjusts itself once every seven days (the half life of the hormone).  When daytime high temperatures vary 25 – 40 degrees over a period of a few days, the thyroid system really struggles to keep up.

Snacking Dooms the French Paradox

Wednesday, September 26, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

The French have always eaten a complex carbohydrate rich diet containing three times the amount of saturated fat as Americans – and never gained weight.  Red wine, garlic, onions, olive oil, home cooking, fresh ingredients, a larger lunch, no snacking, and a smaller dinner were cited as reasons for the success of the French to maintain their proper weight.  Then, in 2000, the unthinkable happened.  French public health officials identified the French were getting fat, 33% were overweight or obese, a rate comparable to Americans back in the in the 70s.  Fast food companies and junk food machines had invaded France, the 30 billion-a-year snacking industry swooped down upon France - a culture that did not know what the word “snack” meant.

Media is Part of the Big Pharma Cartel

Friday, September 21, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Have you ever wondered why the media speaks so highly of drugs and paints safe and effective dietary supplements as either not effective or even dangerous?  As the House and Senate finally agreed to a near useless FDA reform and financing package it became painfully clear that advertising dollars were far more important than health or safety of Americans.

Insulin Treatment for Type II Diabetics Fails

Friday, September 21, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

The New England Journal of Medicine published a study that was supposed to prove what drug strategy for diabetics works the best.  The study participants took several common diabetes drugs along with varied insulin treatments (once, twice, or three times per day).  The researchers were disappointed to find out that none of their strategies worked.  The researchers appeared confused – unable to explain why their study didn’t work.

Almonds Help Weight Management

Friday, September 21, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Almonds, an excellent dietary source of vitamin E, magnesium, fatty acids, and fiber are not only a great part of a healthy weight management program they help lower LDL cholesterol.  A study published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that when woman who ate 344 calories worth of almonds per day felt more satisfied and did not gain weight.  There is nothing worse for a person than eating a really light lunch thinking they are on a great diet only to have a power outage and food cravings set in by mid afternoon.  Eating enough quality fat at lunch helps prevent this problem.

NAC Reduces Gambling Addiction

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

A preliminary study conducted at the University of Minnesota shows that pathological gamblers are significantly helped by the antioxidant nutrient N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC).  The study was conducted based on the notion that NAC modulates glutamate, a neurologic compound that can become an excitotoxin under various circumstances and lead to abnormal brain activation.

Cranberry – An All Purpose Anti-Bacterial

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Well now we know it must be true – even the Wall Street Journal is reporting the powerful anti-bacterial properties of cranberry extracts.  Long used as a proven folk remedy to treat urinary tract infections, scientists are now fascinated with the ability of cranberry proanthocyanadins to prevent infections from “sticking” to human cells.

Dietary Fat and Exercise Stimulate Fat Cell Metabolism

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Contrary to much faulty dietary advice, new science shows that fat is required, along with exercise, to stimulate fat cells to break down stored fat in overweight individuals.  It is quite true that eating too much fat, especially in combination with refined sugar, will lead to weight gain.  However, this new information shows that a low-fat diet is not the best way for an overweight person to stimulate weight loss.

Aerobics and Strength Training Improve Blood Sugar Control

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

I am often asked what exercise is best for weight loss and health in general.  The answer is: any exercise – and many new studies show a combination of various types of exercise are superior to any one form of exercise by itself….

Wyeth Vaccine Causes Super-Strain Ear Infections

Tuesday, September 18, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

he vaccine model of health care has taken another nose five as researchers report that since 2000, when Wyeth’s bacterial strep vaccine Prevnar was put on the market, drug-resistant and rapidly mutating bacteria have moved in to fill the void left by those bacteria treated with the vaccine.  While Wyeth sold $1.5 billion of its vaccine last year….

Even a Moderate Weight Problem Increases Heart Disease Risk

Tuesday, September 11, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

One-third of Americans are obese, two-thirds are overweight.  A new study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine issues a major wake up call.  The risk for developing heart disease in moderately overweight people is 32%, for obese people it is 81%.  Even if a person has normal levels of cholesterol and blood pressure, being moderately overweight still increases the risk by 17%, compared to 49% for an obese person.

Vitamin C and NAC Slow the Spread of Cancer

Tuesday, September 11, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

New research shows that Vitamin C and NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine) significantly inhibited the spread of lymphoma or prostate cancer cells that were implanted in mice.  Scientists had previously believed that the ability of antioxidants to protect against cancer was mainly due to protecting the DNA of cells from damage.  In this new study it was proven that these antioxidants actually worked by preventing cancer cells from replicating.

Drug-related Deaths and Serious Injuries Have Doubled

Tuesday, September 11, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

The FDA reports that between 1998 and 2005 deaths and serious injuries from drugs has doubled, a rate of injury significantly faster than the increase in prescriptions.  51 drugs are responsible for the increase, with new biotech drugs that modulate the immune system at the top of the list.  85% percent of those suffering did not have any label warning that the drug they were taking could produce the serious health problem, injury, or death….

Proper Appetite Signals Improve Immunity

Saturday, September 08, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

A new study shows that the hunger signal ghrelin, as well as leptin itself, enhance the ability of the thymus gland to properly maintain the healthy function of immune cells during aging.  The shrinking of the thymus gland during aging corresponds with a lack of immune cells that want to go out and get the job done.  Instead, there are too many arm-chair generals that would rather sit around and tell war stories than do anything meaningful.  You can learn more about ghrelin by reading chapter 25 in Mastering Leptin.

Food Additives and Artificial Colors Induce ADHD Behavior

Saturday, September 08, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Children are irritating and injuring their brains with commonly consumed garbage, that is the meaning of a study recently published in the Lancet.  One culprit is sodium benzoate, a preservative used in soda and other beverages.  Another culprit is artificial food coloring.  It is interesting to note that when the FDA was given some real regulatory power in 1939 the first thing they did was allow artificial food coloring into the food supply.  These chemical additives are derived from coal tar and made by the German drug companies like Bayer and BASF.  In the first year 39 million tons of these poisons were used in our food, a number which has grown ever since.

Toddlers Need Iron to Protect Against Obesity

Wednesday, September 05, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

A lack of dietary iron is now linked as a contributing factor to the development of obesity in toddlers.  Instead of adequate iron intake such toddlers often had extra sugar consumption in the form of fruit juice.  Either low iron or high sugar intake will induce obesity and the combination is not good.  Researchers found that obese toddlers had an incidence of 20% obesity, compared to 7% in non-obese toddlers.  Iron is required for the formation of hemoglobin which carries oxygen and the cellular utilization of thyroid hormone, important factors in healthy metabolism.

Probiotics Lower Colon Cancer Risk Factors

Wednesday, September 05, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

The health of the digestive tract is the foundation of health for any person.  There are more foreign cells in the digestive tract than comprise the entire human body.  Imbalances in the 3-5 pounds of foreign cells that comprise this digestive terrain are the cause of many health problems, including colon cancer…

Veggies Cut Diabetes Risk 24%

Monday, September 03, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Eating 1 cup of veggies per day as part of a healthy diet is now proven to reduce the risk of diabetes by 24%.  Vegetables contain fiber as well as numerous plant nutrients that are protective to health and help maintain a healthy digestive tract.  Australian researchers tracked 2000 people for 10 years and found that vegetables, legumes in particular (beans, lentils, chickpeas), were superior to fruit or whole grains in terms of reducing diabetes risk.

FDA Unable to Monitor the Safety of Our Food Supply

Monday, September 03, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Let’s face it, the only things that interest Commissioner of the FDA Andrew von Eschenbach are making new and experimental cancer drugs, turning the FDA into a drug development company, and rushing drugs to the market with less safety testing than already exists.  What does he really care about the distraction known as the safety of the food supply?

Coenzyme Q10 Remarkably Improves Circulation

Monday, September 03, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

A new double-blind randomized controlled study tested 300 mg of Coenzyme Q10 per day in patients with heart disease to see if it could improve their circulation and antioxidant defense system.  Researchers called the results “remarkable” in terms of the ability of Q10 to restore faulty antioxidant defense systems in the circulation, particularly in those with the greatest health problems. There was a significant improvement in vascular relaxation in the Q10 group, showing that Q10 is a highly superior nutrient in supporting heart health.

The FDA Wants Your Medical Records

Wednesday, August 29, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

In an unprecedented move the Department of Defense has agreed to share at least some of its 9.1 million medical records of military personnel and their families with the FDA.  The FDA says it wants the information for improved safety monitoring of drugs.  This “safety excuse” is a cover for the FDA to set up the technology to efficiently track the entire population’s medical records.  By working with the military records the FDA can set up and perfect the IT technology required to do this.

Prenatal Programming of Obesity

Wednesday, August 29, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

A new study confirms a growing body of information that the health of the mother during pregnancy has a profound affect on the potential for future obesity.  In the new study it was shown that high blood sugar during pregnancy doubles the risk for obesity between ages 5-7.  Women entering pregnancy in an overweight condition and/or who eat poorly during pregnancy are at risk for this problem as well as multiple other pregnancy issues….

Back to School - DHA for the Eyes and Brain

Wednesday, August 29, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Recent research continues to prove what has been known for many years, that DHA is a vital nutrient in the development of proper eyesight, cognitive function, and learning.  It is especially important for a mother to consume DHA during pregnancy and while nursing.  If a mother isn’t nursing then a DHA-fortified formula is mandatory.  Molecularly distilled DHA is the preferred source as there is no mercury which may be present in fish that are the primary source of dietary DHA.  The brain is one of the fattiest organs in the body and will build its structure out of whatever types of fat are in the diet.  Imagine the ability of a brain made of French fries, potato chips, corn chips, and other junk food…

Soda Poison – Time to Ban High Fructose Corn Syrup

Saturday, August 25, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

New research shows that the high fructose corn syrup used in soda pop is not only a lot of sugar, IT IS TOXIC TO HUMAN HEALTH.  It took ignorant public health officials two decades to figure out trans fats were really as bad as was obvious.  How long will it take this time?

Mitt Romney Running on Vitamin Dollars

Saturday, August 25, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Surprise – Of the 7 million dollars given to the 2008 presidential candidates so far by the health industry Mormon Mitt Romney has taken the lead with $80,000 coming from the Mormon state of Utah’s multi-level vitamin companies Xango, LLC and Melaluca, Inc.  To my knowledge Mitt Romney has never taken any public position in support of dietary supplements on any key issue.  Mitt Romney has just unveiled a health plan to…

Cruciferous Vegetables Cut Prostate Cancer Risk in Half

Thursday, August 23, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Yale researchers have determined that men who eat half a cup of broccoli or cauliflower per week are half as likely to develop the deadly form of prostate cancer.  This information comes from the 29,000 men participating in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial.

The FDA Silently Sanctions Broad Use of Anti-Psychotic Medication in Children

Thursday, August 23, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

If any person was ever looking for evidence that the medical profession and the FDA were beholden to the drug companies at the expense of human health, the use of anti-psychotic medication in our children is the classic example.  On August 22, 2007 the FDA approved Johnson & Johnson’s atypical anti-psychotic drug Risperdal for the treatment of schizophrenia in adolescents, ages 13 to 17, and for the short-term treatment of manic or mixed episodes of bipolar disorder in children and adolescents ages 10 to 17.  In so doing the FDA has silently condoned the use of this class of powerful brain-altering drug to be given for off label use to treat temper tantrums and behavioral outbursts in children of all ages.  This is sick beyond comprehension…
