Optimal Vitamin D Helps Lower Blood Pressure

Monday, January 14, 2008 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

A new finding about vitamin D shows that optimal blood levels of vitamin D are associated with 20% lower blood pressure.  That is a rather interesting finding when you understand that there are 53% more heart attacks in the winter than in the summer and heart attacks in the winter are often more severe.

Vitamin C Associated with 42% Reduced Risk for Stroke

Monday, January 14, 2008 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Vitamin C is one of those antioxidants that pushers of drugs love to say does nothing good, despite hundreds of studies to the contrary.  Now the naysayers are turning orange and purple with envy.  A new study following 20,000 people ages 40-79 from the United Kingdom found that after a decade those with the highest levels of vitamin C in their blood had a 42% decreased risk for stroke.

The Delusion of Bone Drugs

Friday, January 11, 2008 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Women across the country are being duped to consume billions of dollars worth of bone poisons under the false pretense that if they take them long enough they will not develop osteoporosis.  Even the FDA is becoming alarmed by the side effects of these bone drugs.  The biggest selling drug in this class is called Fosamax, made by Merck – the very same company that killed thousands of Americans with Vioxx while hiding cardiovascular risks from the FDA and patients.  Does anyone trust them?...

A variety of new studies regarding the health benefits of whey protein, especially for middle aged and older Americans, are now being reported in the scientific literature.  Whey protein stands out as the very best protein to build muscle strength, even superior to red meat.  A new scientific review finds this is a very important issue for older Americans trying to maintain their health…

Oat Fiber for Healthy Cholesterol Levels

Tuesday, January 08, 2008 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

University of Kentucky researchers have reviewed the oatmeal science over the past 10 years and found the evidence of benefits to be stronger than when the FDA first approved claims for this food a decade ago.  The research clearly shows that total “cholesterol levels are lowered through oat consumption…

The FDA is Sued – Is it the Start of a Trend?

Tuesday, January 08, 2008 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

The New Year brings a surprise for the FDA – a lawsuit filed by Public Citizen seeking to force the FDA to do its pretended job of protecting American citizens from the dangers of drugs.  Of course, the real FDA job, as prioritized by top FDA management, is to protect the sales of Big Pharma and create new market opportunities for Big Pharma and Big Biotech while using Americans for experimental purposes…

How to Get Started on a Quality Supplement Program

Tuesday, January 08, 2008 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

I am often asked how to get started on a good dietary supplement program.  As a designer of pharmaceutical-grade dietary supplements I have given this issue considerable thought over the years – so as to maximize the benefits in the products you are likely to take for your basic health needs. ...

DHA Found to Protect against Alzheimer’s

Wednesday, January 02, 2008 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

We have known for many years that the essential fatty acid DHA is one of the best brain support nutrients for young and old.  Researchers at UCLA’s are identifying exactly how DHA acts to protects against Alzheimer’s disease.

Tame Your Cravings with Pine Nut Oil

Wednesday, January 02, 2008 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Each year countless Americans make the New Years resolution to lose weight and each year the best dieting efforts of many are met with frustration and mediocre, if any, success.  Public health pundits keep preaching to exercise more and eat less – a message everyone already knows.  What can you do?

B12 and Folic Acid Should be Taken Together

Wednesday, January 02, 2008 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Folic Acid is an important B vitamin for nerve and cardiovascular health.  As such, it is being widely promoted – even food is being fortified with extra folic acid.  There is no question that folic acid supplementation before and during pregnancy cuts down on nerve-related problems in the newborn child.

Quality Sleep is a Weight-Loss Key

Wednesday, January 02, 2008 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

I have long reported that sleep is the primary fat-burning time, especially when a person does not eat food before bed.  Of course if you exercise you will burn more calories during and following exercise; but in terms of the ideal time of the day to simply burn more fat it is during sleep.  Between meals during the day (assuming you do not snack) you will burn 60% glucose and 40% fatty acids.  After 6 hours of not eating (such as during sleep) this ratio flips around and you begin to burn 60% fatty acids until you wake up, your prime fat-burning time if you have managed your daily eating patterns according to the Leptin Diet.

Bad Breath more Common in Overweight People

Wednesday, December 26, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Researchers at Tel Aviv University are the first to identify a link between bad breath and being overweight.  Alcohol intake was also a problem.  While it is well known that poor dental hygiene is a typical factor in bad breath, it can now be understood that poor metabolism and/or poor digestive health may be large factors in this issue.

Pfizer – Lipitor Suit Moves Forward while Officials Flee the Law in Nigeria

Wednesday, December 26, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Lipitor for lowering cholesterol (a statin) is the best selling drug of all time.  A newly unveiled lawsuit based on information provided by a top former Pfizer exec now turned whistleblower is showing that this stroke of marketing genius was based on blatantly illegal marketing and pushing the drug on Americans who really did not need it.  As the poster child for the statin scam Pfizer has likely damaged the health of millions of Americans.  Now there is an attempt to hit them where it counts, in the pocket book.

Corn – When is Food No Longer Food?

Tuesday, December 18, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Farmers growing corn for ethanol are no longer farmers in any traditional sense; they are part of the oil industry.  It is now being reported that the millions of pounds of nitrogen-based fertilizer needed to grow the corn are entering the Mississippi and going out into the gulf wherein they create a 7,900-square-mile “dead zone” void of oxygen wherein fish, crabs and shrimp suffocate and hostile algae grow.

ADHD Linked to Poor Brain Development

Tuesday, December 18, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

A body of new scientific work is showing that ADHD may be rooted in the failure of the brain to develop at a normal rate, meaning that a 10 year old is behaving like a four year old and has a delay in anatomical brain development to prove it.  This information is consistent with what I have been saying for some time about the importance of nutrient status in the womb, the health of the mother during pregnancy, especially regarding the subject of leptin.  Womb-related issues and early life nutritional status are likely to have a huge bearing on childhood brain development and consequent intelligence (or lack thereof).

Fish Oil Lowers Fat Mass and Shrinks Fat Cells

Monday, December 17, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

In a study with 27 type II diabetic women it was found that three grams of fish oil per day (containing 1.8 grams of omega 3 fatty acids like DHA) given for two months reduced total fat mass as well as reduced the size of fat cells.  Inflammatory genes operating within fat were also reduced, an important result indicating that leptin status was improved (though not directly measured).  This study shows how fish oil can improve unhealthy body composition even in individuals with significantly disturbed metabolism.

Carnitine Improves Energy and Physical Function in Centenarians

Monday, December 17, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Living to the ripe old age of 100 is not always a lot of fun.  Typical problems involve poor endurance and weakness, especially upon physical activity (when this happens before age 60 its called fibromyalgia).  Another key problem is deteriorating cognitive function and memory.

Dietary Supplement Trade Group Promotes Food Coloring Use

Friday, December 14, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

The International Alliance for Dietary/Food Supplement Associations (IADSA) is actively supporting the use of food coloring in dietary supplements, guidelines that are being written up for the proposed Codex guidelines that pose a grave threat to free access to dietary supplements in America.

High Homocysteine – A New Risk Factor for Bone Loss

Friday, December 14, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Homocysteine is naturally produced by the liver during protein metabolism and then cleared with the help of the B vitamins like folic acid, B12, and B6.  It is well known that if homocysteine levels build up due to B vitamin deficiency (which is common) then a toxic level of homocysteine is reached that causes cholesterol to form plaque and interferes with neurotransmitter function making depression more likely.

A new study is showing that high levels of homocysteine can accumulate in bone by binding to collagen.  This in turn causes abnormal collagen linking, resulting in poor bone formation.  On top of that, the homocysteine also acts to stimulate osteoclasts – the type of bone cell involved in bone loss.

Lipoic Acid in Combination with Acetyl-L-Carnitine Activates Fat Cell Metabolism

Friday, December 14, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Fancy experiments with high tech equipment are now becoming the norm.  Such research is beginning to unravel the complex mystery of genes and related proteins involved in metabolism.  Acetyl-L-Carnitine has long been known to help metabolize fat.  Lipoic Acid has long been known to help metabolize carbohydrate.  A new study with fat cells show that the two used together, better than either alone, work synergistically to increase the metabolic rate of fat cells.

Fish Oil Improves Circulation in Healthy People

Friday, December 14, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

The essential fatty acids in fish oil, especially DHA, are now recognized as an excellent cardiovascular support nutrient.  A new study in healthy younger men and women shows that fish oil at a small dose of 1 gram per day was able to improve the function of their arteries, helping them dilate easier so blood could flow better.  It also helped reduce their resting heart rate, meaning the heart did not have to work as hard to get its job done.

A New Obesity Path to Heart Disease

Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

It has been known for a while that dental bacterial infections and gum disease are linked to an increase in heart disease.  Researchers have now shown that obesity suppresses the anti-bacterial defense system leading to bacterial infections in the mouth.  This is the first study of this type to show this correlation.

Folic Acid and DHA for Cognitive Function and Alzheimer’s

Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

New research is explaining the importance of folic acid and DHA for improved cognitive function and prevention of neuro-degeneration.  Folic acid is found to lower the brain and cardiovascular irritant, homocysteine.  It directly improves brain function and helps to raise the levels of DHA in the blood.  DHA is known to help generate new nerve growth, improve nerve transmission and connectivity, enhance nerve-related memory factors, and reduce brain inflammation.

Fitness More Important than Obesity for Survival in Elderly

Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

An interesting new study in older Americans shows very clearly that those who are the most fit live the longest.  Fit fatter people live longer than thin unfit people.  Of course, those who are overweight have a tendency to become unfit – a bad combination.  It is now also clear that those overweight early in life are more likely to get a variety of diseases.  However, these new findings are quite encouraging to those who are consistently exercising in an effort to improve their health, yet may still be struggling with their weight.

Spotlight Shines on Ineptitude of Medical Sinus Treatments

Monday, December 10, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

The Journal of the American Medical Association has just published a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study showing that the use of antibiotics and nasal steroids is ineffective at treating sinusitis.

The Statin Scam Marches On

Monday, December 10, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Considering that tens of millions of Americans now take statins to lower cholesterol, the following headline was conspicuously absent from the major media this month:  “Statins Found to Turn On Gene that Causes Muscle Damage.”  It’s now a fact of science; a new study shows that taking statins destroys your muscle to a greater or lesser degree.  And let’s not forget that the heart is a muscle.

FDA Sleeps While Common Medications Poison the Elderly

Thursday, December 06, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

On November 29, 2007 the FDA made a rather surprising, almost honest announcement.  It said that it could not protect Americans from the dangers of drugs.  A 56-page report by its Subcommittee on Science and Technology stated the FDA “suffers from serious scientific deficiencies and is not positioned to meet current or emerging regulatory responsibilities.”  This blistering report on the life-threatening shortcomings of the FDA was released with the stamp of approval of the head of the FDA, Commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach.  The flagrant disregard for human health by the FDA…

B Vitamin Deficient Parents More Likely to Produce Overweight Children

Tuesday, December 04, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Proper health preparation prior to and during pregnancy has a profound affect on the future health of the child.  The “fetal programming” that takes place is especially involved with energy regulation, formation of metabolic “hardware,” and the likelihood of obesity during childhood or even adulthood.

Grape Seed Extracts – Powerful Protection for the Heart and Skin

Tuesday, December 04, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Grape seed extracts contain powerful antioxidants as well as a unique ability to attach to collagen structures, including those that comprise the heart, arteries, and general circulation.  A variety of new studies are showing that these extracts are a powerful cardiovascular protector.

Tocotrienols and Citrus Flavonoids Lower Cholesterol by 20-30%

Tuesday, December 04, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

A new study shows the power of natural substances to help promote healthy levels of cholesterol.  A combination of tocotrienols and citrus-derived polymethoxylated flavones were tested on men and women with high cholesterol (total greater than 230).

Common Diabetes Drug Causes Bone Loss – Medical Profession in a Funk

Tuesday, December 04, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

The commonly used and much maligned diabetes drug, Avandia, just took another spill down the stairs.  A new mouse study shows that the drug weakens bones and is likely to cause osteoporosis in the millions of users in the United States.  The drug was shown to get directly in the way of healthy bone function, causing accelerated bone loss and slowed bone growth.

CT Scans: A Source of Medically Induced Cancer

Thursday, November 29, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Does it upset anybody to know that 1000 cases of cancer per year are needlessly caused in children by the very doctors who the children are seeing for help?  An additional 4000 cases of cancer are caused in children each year under the pretense that taking a picture of the child’s internal body is medically necessary.  The frequency of cancer in the adult population from CT scans is 10-20 times the number for children (10,000-20,000 needless cases of cancer plus an additional 40,000-80,000 “justified” cases of cancer).

DHA Protects Against Parkinson’s

Tuesday, November 27, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

A rather amazing mouse study has just shown that DHA, an important omega-3 essential fatty acid that is known to support healthy brain function, completely protected the brains of mice exposed to a known toxin that routinely produces Parkinson’s disease.

Overweight Children and Teens at Risk for Weak Bones

Tuesday, November 27, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

It has long been thought that extra body weight, while a risk for many health problems, was not a risk for bone health.  A new study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition is now raising concerns of abnormal bone formation due to obesity.

High Dose Vitamin E is Safe for the Heart

Tuesday, November 20, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

A randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled study tested 1200 IU of vitamin E per day for two years in patients with coronary artery disease.  The study is significant because various forces promoting drugs have fraudulently concocted anti-vitamin E studies in an effort to get older people to take more drugs and to not take vitamin E.  Of course, the Big Pharma-sponsored media did not report the pro-vitamin E study.

Adequate Oxygenation Vital to Healthy Metabolism

Tuesday, November 20, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

New research is uncovering how hemoglobin behaves within a cell to deliver oxygen to the cell engines so that calories can be burned as fuel.  Oxygen must be present within cells in order for metabolism to work at an optimal rate.  Thyroid hormone is short-circuited at the cellular level if oxygen is not present.

Obesity Drugs are Problematic

Tuesday, November 20, 2007 - (Byron J. Richards, CCN)

Obesity drugs are big business, pulling in 1.2 billion in sales last year.  The British Medical Journal just published a review of the three main weight loss drugs and found that Orlistat increased rates of gastrointestinal side effects and slightly lowered concentrations of HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol), Sibutramine lowered concentrations of HDL, raised blood pressure, and increased pulse rate, and Rimonabant increased the risk of depression, anxiety, and mood disorders.
