Researchers have demonstrated that 25 grams of whey protein1 following resistance exercise maximally stimulates the gene signaling system that enhances muscle rejuvenation.  They demonstrated in humans that whey protein activates the exact same gene signaling system (mTOR) that is responsible for the longevity benefits of branched-chain amino acids recently demonstrated in mice (Branched-Chain Amino Acids Extend Lifespan in Mice).

Collectively these studies show how branched-chain amino acids not only help a person gain fitness but also have the potential to extend human lifespan.  It is important to understand that this is far more than just building muscle – there is an actual new genesis of cell engines going on (new mitochondria Organelle found in cells that produce ATP or chemical energy. Also involved with cell signaling, cellular differentiation, cell death, cell growth, along with heme and steroid synthesis. ).  This means the ability of muscles to make energy is increasing and the energy-producing cells are being protected so that they can function longer (extended life).

When you have more functional mitochondria Organelle found in cells that produce ATP or chemical energy. Also involved with cell signaling, cellular differentiation, cell death, cell growth, along with heme and steroid synthesis. working at a higher level it means they will be more efficient at combining oxygen and fuel (blood sugar or fatty acids) in order to make energy.  When you are combusting oxygen more efficiently at the cellular level then your thyroid hormone function automatically improves.  When you are more fit to burn blood sugar then insulin resistance improves – a longevity factor in and of itself.

Because your heart is also a muscle, a side benefit of the exercise is turning on gene systems that directly help rejuvenate cardiovascular function.

I like whey protein for an easy to use and metabolically helpful breakfast.  Another time to consider taking it is right after a good strength training/resistance exercise workout.
