Vitamin D Reduces Bacterial Infections During Pregnancy

Wednesday, May 20, 2009  -  Byron Richards, CCN

Bacterial vaginal infections1 are common and result in pregnancy complications.  A new study shows that women with higher vitamin D levels are much less likely to have such infections.  Infection levels declined in direct proportion to higher vitamin D levels.

Adequate vitamin D is needed for many functions of health.  During pregnancy the immune system is intentionally down-regulated so that the fetus is not rejected by the mother’s own immune system – which can set the stage for opportunistic infections to gain a toe hold.

The fact that vitamin D can prevent this problem is more proof of vitamin D’s friendly regulation of immunity – boosting it when it is low and calming it down when it is inappropriately hyper.
