Vitamin D Lowers Depression and Nerve Pain in Women with Type 2 Diabetes

Supplementation with 50,000 IU of vitamin D per week (7,142 IU per day) over a six month period in women with type 2 diabetes significantly improved depression, shooting or burning pain in the legs, as well as numbness and tingling.

Nerve injury resulting in depression and pain from type 2 diabetes is common. Higher levels of sugar induce damage to the nerves. Once it starts happening it is difficult to change because a person with type 2 diabetes is metabolically inefficient to the point that problems tend to magnify and worsen rather than improve.

Thus, anything that can offset the nerve stress induced by high blood sugar without causing other side effects (like typical drugs employed) is a bit of a miracle. Higher doses of vitamin D in women with type 2 diabetes offers significant hope to make improvement in helping nerves function better.
