Vitamin D Low in Type I Diabetes

Monday, December 22, 2008  -  Byron Richards, CCN

A new study surprised researchers when it found that 75% of children with type I diabetes1 are lacking vitamin D.  On the one hand, this means that any parent with a child who has type I diabetes must ensure their child takes extra vitamin D to prevent future bone loss.  This means up to 2000 IU of vitamin D per day in the winter.  Our government’s recommendation of 400 IU of vitamin D is not adequate for most and will not correct a vitamin D deficiency.

On the other hand, this data adds further evidence that low vitamin D is a risk factor for developing autoimmune type I diabetes.  I reported earlier this year on studies linking the lack of vitamin D to this problem.  Ensure your child is adequate in vitamin D.
