Vitamin C Protects Against Cataracts

Saturday, June 14, 2008  -  Byron Richards, CCN

A new eye study that tracked 2464 adults age 49 or older for 5-10 years has found that those with the highest vitamin C intake1 (diet plus supplements) had a 55% less chance of developing a cataract.

Less vitamin C was needed when combined with other antioxidants such as vitamin E and beta carotene.  In this case if all antioxidants were above the median then there was a 51% reduced risk.  Antioxidants work synergistically, wherein one antioxidant helps to re-energize another.

Your eyes are exposed to the ionizing radiation of the sun, which generates free radicals that damage the lens of your eye.  This study shows that long term intake of antioxidants helps protect the lens of your eye from damage.
