The Vital Role of Selenium in Thyroid Function and Health

Scientists are now reporting than many people are likely to benefit from selenium1 supplementation.  Selenium is the key mineral that enables the conversion of thyroid hormone from T4 to T3 (biologically active form).  Selenium is also required to make the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which protects the thyroid gland – including protecting it from thyroid autoimmune problems.

Earlier studies have clearly demonstrated that 200 mcg of selenium per day can reduce the level of thyroid autoantibodies2 by 40%.  A recent case study documented that as selenium levels went up in the blood from supplementation, then glutathione peroxidase3 rose and thyroid autoantibodies declined by from 76%.

Interestingly, another recent study shows that selenium is not only linked to the level of glutathione peroxidase, but also to the level of progesterone Steroid hormone produced in ovaries and adrenal glands that is involved with female menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and embyro development. in young women.  This study clearly links selenium status, thyroid function, and adequate progesterone Steroid hormone produced in ovaries and adrenal glands that is involved with female menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and embyro development..  Since a lack of progesterone Steroid hormone produced in ovaries and adrenal glands that is involved with female menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and embyro development. causes a multitude of PMS related symptoms, selenium status may be a new key to helping out this problem, along with its well documented antioxidant, immune boosting, and thyroid support properties.
