Curcumin, the extract from the spice turmeric, is one of the most talked about nutrients in the supplement world.  It has nearly endless health benefits and has shown positive effects when dealing with many inflammatory diseases including cancer, arthritis, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel disease, psoriasis, diabetes and more.

In the last 10 years, curcumin has been heavily researched and found to be extremely effective against depression and other mood disorders. Human studies have found that supplemental curcumin was as effective as Prozac at improving symptoms of depression without the side effects.  When combined with traditional antidepressants, curcumin improves symptoms even further.

While this bright orange supplement would benefit just about anyone, it makes a great addition during the winter months for anyone that struggles with depression or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).

Move Over Prozac

Much of the mood boosting benefits of curcumin come from its powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Curcumin is one of the best anti-inflammatory nutrients in the world. In fact, the journal Oncogene published a review of anti-inflammatories and concluded that curcumin was more effective at reducing inflammation than Aspirin or ibuprofen.

By reducing inflammation in the brain, curcumin enhances the flow of neurotransmitters. This is a different mechanism than traditional pharmaceutical antidepressants, which try to prop up the supply of neurotransmitters regardless of the current level of inflammation. Depression and a low mood are more than an imbalance of neurotransmitters or low serotonin, they reflect inflammation, high levels of oxidative stress, and stressed nerve signals. Curcumin addresses the root causes of depression from these angles without side effects.

Quality Differences

The health benefits of curcumin are undeniable, so you are undoubtedly seeing curcumin being sold everywhere. There are important quality differences, though. Read your labels and know what to look for in a high-quality curcumin supplement.

The superior quality curcumin is called Curcumin C3 Complex. This form of curcumin provides a very high concentration (95%) of curcuminoids, the active component responsible for providing health benefits. This is a higher concentration than most curcumin or turmeric supplements on the market. Plus, C3 Complex curcumin is the most studied and trusted form of curcumin available.

Curcumin can be poorly absorbed and quickly flushed out of the body. Therefore, it is best combined with piperine, a special black pepper extract that enhances absorption of the curcumin.  This combination improves the health benefits that curcumin offers.

It is supposed to be the happiest season of all, but sometimes we could all use a little mood boost around the Holidays. Whether you suffer from the occasional blues, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), or full-blown depression, by addressing the root causes of a low mood, curcumin will help improve your symptoms. Get back to enjoying the season. Happy Holidays!
