Teen Abuse of ADHD Drugs – A Life-Threatening Problem

Question:  When is a street drug of choice not a street drug?  Answer:  When it can also be sold by Big Pharma.  ADHD drugs bind to cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) receptors in the brain, the same receptors that crystal meth and cocaine binds to – receptors that have also gone awry in the case of regular excess alcohol consumption. A new study reported by the Associated Press shows a 76 percent increase in emergency calls to poison control centers across the nation due to ADHD drugs.

The adverse side effect of these drugs in younger people is particularly troublesome since their brain circuitry is still evolving, and includes excessive rapid heart beat, skyrocketing blood pressure, agitation, psychosis, and delirium. The more serious side effects are heart attacks and stroke.

CART receptors are involved in normal nerve transmission, part of the energetic side of your nervous system. Wiring them up with substances is an extremely risky undertaking, since your brain must have adequate buffers or brakes to accommodate activation. CART-activating substances like ADHD drugs can easily bypass your nerves natural breaking capacity, like racing down a mountain in a Mack truck with no breaks.

It is my opinion that this angle on the drug problem has been created by “health professionals” over-prescribing ADHD medication to children – raising a pill popping generation and secondary black market for ADHD drugs.  Sure, there is a tiny fraction of people with true ADHD. It is not 90% of the children on these meds.

Using stimulant drugs, with or without the approval of a doctor, is a fast path to burning out your nerves and adversely changing their wiring – problems that are barely, if at all, fixable. What happens to your nerves when they exceed their breaking limit?  It’s about the same thing that happens when your credit limit on your favorite credit card is all used up and there is no way to pay it off.  The day of reckoning will show up sooner or later.
