Supplemental Carnitine Corrects Glucose Intolerance

Sunday, August 23, 2009  -  Byron Richards, CCN

A new study shows that supplemental carnitine can correct defects in fatty acid metabolism and glucose utilization that are due to the stress or obesity on metabolism or the affects of aging.  This finding is of significant value in helping to correct and prevent diabetes and other problems associated with metabolic syndrome.

The researchers were able to determine that defects in carnitine metabolism were causing a build up of byproducts that were literally clogging metabolism.  They observed this happening in both overweight and old rats.  It took 8 weeks of carnitine supplementation to correct these defects and restore function back to normal.

The preferred form of carnitine supplementation is acetyl-l-carnitine, because this form also crosses your blood brain barrier and helps memory, mood, and stress tolerance – as well as providing basic carnitine for improved metabolic function.  It has long been known that carnitine helps fatty acid metabolism.  This new research shows that as carnitine helps improve various aspects of fat metabolism it also helps correct glucose intolerance, a very interesting finding.
