It has been known for a long time that a diet high in fruits and vegetables as a specific variable prevents osteoporosis in humans. Such a diet would be high in quercetin. Several new studies confirm that quercetin is yet another bone support nutrient.

It is known that individuals with diabetes are at risk for developing poor bone health. A new animal study tested quercetin in diabetic rats to determine its potential benefit to bone health. The researchers found that quercetin could increase the low serum alkaline phosphate level, which is an enzyme reflective of bone building activity. They also found an increase in osteocalcin Hormone secreted by osteoblasts for the bone formation process. It is also involved with pancreatic and insulin function and adiponectin secretion., a compound required for the formation of bone. Detailed analysis of the bone showed that quercetin lowered free radical damage in bone and could partially reverse the decline in structural integrity of the bone.

One key aspect of accelerated bone loss is the hyper activity of osteoclasts Type of bone cell that removes old, damaged bone by the process bone resorption., cells that act to take bone apart. These cells are part of the natural demo crew. In health, they clear the way for new bone cells to form. In conditions of excess bone loss, it is an example of the demo crew gone wild. Another new study shows that quercetin potently slows down osteoclast activity, helping to preserve existing bone. And yet another recent study showed that the ability of quercetin to calm down hyperactive osteoclasts Type of bone cell that removes old, damaged bone by the process bone resorption. could help preserve dental bone structure and prevent periodontal bone loss.

In reality, a variety of anti-inflammatory nutrients show benefit to bone health and it is best to use a number of them if you are struggling or concerned about bone health. Such anti-inflammatory nutrients would be combined with calcium, vitamin D, and dietary protein as key raw materials to facilitate bone formation. Quercetin is one nutrient worthy of consideration to assist bone health, as part of an overall bone health program.
