Progesterone Helps Brain TraumaSaturday, January 02, 2010 - Byron Richards, CCNA new study suggests that progesterone should be used as a for brain trauma for men and women. While the research is talking about severe brain trauma, especially in returning injured soldiers, the study has far-reaching implications. Describing the benefits of progesterone lead researcher Donald G. Stein states ” Progesterone given to both males and females can cross the blood-brain barrier and reduce edema (swelling) levels after traumatic brain injury; in different models of cerebral ischemia (restriction of blood supply), significantly reduce the area of necrotic cell death and improve behavioral outcomes; and protect neurons distal to the injury that would normally die. Progesterone was recently tested in two phase 2 clinical trials for traumatic brain injury and will begin a phase 3 NIH sponsored trial soon. Given its relatively high safety profile, its ease of administration, its low cost and ready availability, progesterone should be considered a viable treatment option—especially because, in brain injury, so little else is currently available.“ This research can benefit many more people who have brain trauma that is not quite so severe. This could be from a traumatic loss, acute high stress, post traumatic stress disorder, etc. These types of brain trauma are not as intense as a traumatic brain injury, but many of the mechanisms of damage are the same albeit on a lesser scale. Nevertheless, and tornado going through your nervous system is going to knock down power lines and bridges. It appears progesterone could be used during or following such times to protect your nerves from damage. Related Entries: How Progesterone Promotes Healthy Full-Term Pregnancy### Other Health News
