Health & Wellness News From Byron J. Richards
Oat Fiber for Healthy Cholesterol LevelsTuesday, January 08, 2008 - Byron J. Richards, CCNUniversity of Kentucky researchers have reviewed the oatmeal science over the past 10 years and found the evidence of benefits to be stronger than when the FDA first approved claims for this food a decade ago. The research clearly shows that total “cholesterol levels are lowered through oat consumption; low-density lipoprotein (LDL, the “bad” cholesterol) is reduced without adverse effects on high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL, the “good” cholesterol).” The researchers reported that the recent studies suggest eating oatmeal may: The active component in oatmeal is oat beta glucan. Knowing the value of oats our government’s U.S. Department of Agriculture actually developed and patented a concentrated version of whole oats that boosts the amount of oat beta glucan and has a smooth mouth feel and pleasant taste. This enables individuals to get all the health benefits of whole oats without having to eat so many. The rights to the invention were sold to private industry and are now marketed as Nutrim™ oat bran. Wellness Resources uses Nutrim™ oat bran in our Daily Protein Plus breakfast meal drink and in our Fiber Helper supplement. Both products use enough Nutrim™ per serving to qualify for the FDA heart-friendly health claim.
