Italian researchers checked the magnesium status of people with mild-to-moderate Alzheimer’s disease. Compared to controls, those with low-ionized magnesium levels had the most impaired cognitive function.

Magnesium ions are vital to over 300 enzyme systems, many of which deal with making energy (ATP) as well as the vital functions of cellular DNA and RNA. Without adequate magnesium the final stages of energy production cannot occur at an optimal rate. When the brain lacks energy, its speed is reduced and so is its function.

Most Americans do not get enough magnesium in their diets and supplementation is therefore highly recommended.
