Lutein and Zeaxanthin Protect Against Macular Degeneration

The consumption of the carotenes lutein and zeaxanthin, from food and dietary supplements, raises your blood levels of these nutrients which then accumulate in tissues around your body, including your eyes.

These nutrients are key to vision because they actually form the macular pigment region in your eye, and they have been shown to increase the size /thickness of this region when they are supplemented.  This offers tremendous protection against vision loss and blindness.

Foods that contain these nutrients include spinach, eggs, kale, collard greens, turnip greens, broccoli, zucchini, romaine lettuce, corn, and peas.  Dietary supplement intake of 20 mg lutein per day, which is more than you will get from food, has been proven to increase macular pigment health.

It is important to understand that these type of antioxidant carotenes are either slowly and steadily nourishing your body tissues over the years or they are being depleted slowly and steadily over the years – meaning damage to structures like your eye can develop over a long period of time and eventually show up clinical loss of vision.

The take home message is to ensure your eyes are well nourished, especially after the age of 40.  Lost eyesight cannot be replaced.
