Individuals with Type II Diabetes are at particular high risk for cardiovascular disease.  In a double-blinded randomized crossover trial 32 type II Diabetic patients were given 600 mg of grape seed extract1 or placebo each day for four weeks.  The results were very positive as the researchers concluded that grape seed extract use in Type II Diabetics “may have a therapeutic role in decreasing cardiovascular risk.”

The results showed statistically significant improvement in blood sugar control, improved antioxidant status (boosting glutathione levels in the blood), reduction of inflammatory C-reactive protein CRP C-reactive protein. It is an acute phase protein that increases during systemic inflammation. It is a general way to assess cardiovascular disease risk. A more sensitive test for heart disease risk is hs-CRP, highly sensitive CRP. . It is an acute phase protein that increases during systemic inflammation.
