Folic Acid Supplements Reduce Breast Cancer Risk

Saturday, February 07, 2009  -  Byron Richards, CCN

Researchers were trying to prove that taking folic acid supplements1 would increase a woman’s chance for breast cancer.  Much to their dismay, they found that after ten years of supplementation folic acid was protective against breast cancer.  Folic acid was especially helpful at preventing estrogen receptor negative breast cancer, as well as breast cancer associated with alcohol consumption.

Folic acid is difficult to get in adequate amounts from the diet, making supplementation mandatory for optimal stress management, cardiovascular health, pregnancy health, and now – breast cancer risk reduction.  As usual, if a drug could do this it would be on the front page of every paper.  At least the authors of the study had the integrity to publish their results – often such data is thrown in the trash when it comes out different than what those paying for the research expected.
